Sharia’s Closet is a San Diego-based nonprofit organization providing no-cost necessities and emergency services in the form of new/gently used clothing, diapers, and personal hygiene products to people in need. We provide personalized empowerment services for all including victims of domestic violence, natural disasters, and human trafficking as well as unsheltered or unemployed individuals. We know proper clothing and supplies helps people maintain a sense of dignity and self-esteem in times of insecurity or uncertainty.

THE ROLE

Sharia’s Closet is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Closet Associate. As part of the front-facing team of Sharia’s Closet, it is imperative that Associates embodies a heart of service, are cordial, respectful, and professional under all circumstances, as many times you will be the first in-person impression people have of our organization. As a Closet Associate, you will be interfacing with Case Managers, Program Managers, Social Workers, and other staff from various organizations, in addition to volunteers, donors, clients, and other guests from the community.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year in retail, particularly clothing.
  • Skills & Abilities: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Fluency or conversational level in a foreign language is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and customer service mentality.
  • Ability to effectively work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be customer and detail-oriented, organized, and flexible in a high paced environment.
  • People-person - ability to engage with individuals from various backgrounds and practice cultural humility.
  • Team player - flexibility to take on small or large tasks or multitask as needed to fulfill the mission of Sharia's Closet.

Desirable Experience

  • Work or volunteered at a small non-profit.
  • Work or volunteered with under-resourced communities.
  • 1-2 years of retail or related industry leadership experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for the majority of work shift.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, climbing, and twisting.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Learning, referencing, and applying product knowledge information to recommend, select, and obtain merchandise based on customers' needs.
  • Maintain working knowledge of resources, programs, and procedures; serve as a resource for volunteers and staff.
  • Process incoming referrals and emergency requests by generating and printing orders.
  • Fulfill emergency requests by creating and packing customized bags of clothing and accessories.
  • Assist with checking customers/clients in and out, as well as donors and volunteers.
  • Oversee the processing of incoming donations (including but not limited to) quality assurance; sorting; folding; stocking shelves; organizing clothing shelves, racks, and rooms.
  • Replenish stock items when shelves depleted.
  • Track and inventory donation items and office supplies.
  • Have detailed knowledge of all company policies and procedures.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to clients, case managers, donors, and volunteers in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment to ensure the store is always customer ready.
  • Communicate successes or potential barriers to the Executive Team
  • Help Executive Team and program staff achieve organizational goals with additional tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to assist in fulfilling the mission and goals of Sharia’s Closet.

Schedule

  • Monday- Friday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
  • Two Saturdays a month, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Salary

  • $16- $18 per hour Pay Range in San Diego, CA. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
