About the role

Reports to: Director of Biomedical Research or Sr. Director IOL Material Research

Function: Research & Development

Work Location/Site: California, Irvine


Role Overview

The ideal candidate will have 2-4 years of experience in the medical device industry, with a strong background in chemistry, material, formulations and testing and characterization of raw materials and polymers. This role will play a crucial role in research, development, and innovation in the field of ophthalmology.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to the research and development of advanced materials and formulations for intraocular lens manufacturing
  • Design, execute, and formulate novel materials to enhance the properties of existing products
  • Design and conduct experiments to assess the physical, chemical, and optical properties of IOL materials.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing products and processes
  • Prepare detailed documentation of material formulations, testing protocols, and analysis results
  • Support the preparation of technical reports and regulatory documentation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement enhancements and address any issues related to materials or processes
  • Collaborate with internal customer and external vendors to achieve alignment, discuss paths forward and spearhead activities to support.
  • Other duties as assigned by the the Head of Biomedical Engineering which may include assignments to support and work closely with other functions, department within and across the organization.


Requirements

Experience

  • 2 to 4 years of research experience in the medical device industry, with a focus on intraocular lens technology
  • Experience in the development and characterization of polymeric materials
  • Experience with mechanical testing of materials as well as rheological characterization of solutions and gels
  • Prior experience in IOLs and knowledge of ISO standards related to IOLs is a plus


Skills/Accreditations

  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, polymers, and materials science
  • Familiarity with quality management systems
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in technical and non-technical areas
  • Ability to multi-task at a fast-paced environment


Academic Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field


Travel requirements

  • 10 to 20%. 3-4 times oversea assignment possible
