Sports Editor/Reporter
Help the Wisconsin State Journal team captivate and engage audiences by joining our award-winning staff as a sports staff editor and reporter.
We are looking for a self-motivated journalist who enjoys having a hand in multiple parts of telling a good story and attracting an audience to it. This is a hybrid role where you will split your time between being a member of a three-person team that shepherds our award-winning print section through the production process and reporting on trends and issues that surround sports in southern Wisconsin, from high schools to the University of Wisconsin.
The job will be based out of our Madison office, which is located a short drive from the state Capitol, and report to our deputy sports editor. Madison offers plenty to keep you busy, from live theater and concerts to incredible biking and hiking opportunities.
You will be part of the state’s lone AP Sports Editors Triple Crown winner, a staff that encourages creativity and experimentation in how we tell stories, and there will be ample opportunities to collaborate with colleagues on ideas that interest you.
We want to empower you to tell great stories using words, video, audio, graphics and images while ensuring all our stories have the greatest potential to connect with our readers.

- Be dependable and comfortable multitasking to handle multiple deadlines
- Demonstrate an eye for enterprising storytelling angles: Context and analysis are crucial to success in this position
- Understand the importance of editing stories for style, completeness, fairness, grammar, spelling, accuracy, organization and conciseness
- Enjoy collaborating with others to tell bigger stories and tackle bigger issues
- Embrace the challenge of writing SEO-friendly headlines for our digital audience and catchy headlines for our print products
- Show an ability to create content beyond the written word
