Speech Pathology Assistant

Job Summary


Under the supervision of a credentialed Language, Speech, and Hearing Therapist, completes a variety of tasks such as activities designed to develop pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication; works with students who have identified speech and language disorders as well as other disabilities; performs related duties as assigned.


Duties And Responsibilities


Conducts speech and language screenings, without interpretation, and uses screening protocols developed by the Language, Speech, and Hearing Therapist.


Provides direct treatment assistance to students; follows and implements documented treatment plans or protocols


Documents student progress toward meeting established objectives and reports the information to the therapist


Assists the therapist during assessments by assisting with documentation and performing clerical duties


Prepares therapy material and/or equipment for use in therapy activities; adapts or modifies instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities


Assists in maintaining appropriate behavior between activities; prepares various teaching materials such as charts, pictures, word lists, and other related items.


Ensure that students with disabilities are receiving free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.


Assist parents in problem-solving and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of their child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).


Maintain confidentiality and organization of records through observable procedures consistent with division and site.


Performs other duties assigned as requested by leadership staff.


Education: Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year, accredited university, in speech-language pathology or communication disorders, or graduation from a speech-language pathology assistant program; current registration as a Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of federal, state, and local mandates and procedures as it relates to students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of special education programs and services in the District and the community.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in planning, organizing, and coordinating meaningful activities for appropriate individuals and/or groups in a pleasant, professional manner.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the use of the District’s electronic IEP system.
  • Lead professional development activities for staff as they relate to special education.
  • Work cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
  • Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff.
  • Work in a collegial manner with all district staff to provide students an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Communicate effectively both written and orally.


Equipment Used: Microsoft Office, Eduphoria, Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier). General Knowledge of accounting procedures, district policies, and school law.


Working/Environmental Conditions/Mental Demands/Physical Demands: Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment that does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. Ability to carry and/or lift less than 20 pounds.
