Position Overview

The Special Education Instructional Specialist at our school enhances general education instruction to meet the diverse and unique needs of our students. The role focuses on improving student growth and achievement in reading, writing, listening, speaking, math, and/or science, as measured by Access,, and Milestones assessments. Reporting to the School Principal, this full-time, 10-month, exempt position offers the opportunity to support a range of students while prioritizing those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, involvement in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and/or English Language Learners.

Responsibilities And Duties

Instruct students with learning disabilities, mild intellectual disabilities, and emotional behavioral disorders using effective teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, and visual aids.

Prepare and implement comprehensive lesson plans that accommodate student IEPs and include necessary supports and accommodations.

Collaborate closely with general education teachers to ensure effective co-teaching and integration of special education strategies.

Administer various assessments, including performance assessments and formal/informal assessments, to monitor student comprehension and progress.

Monitor and analyze student data to track progress on IEP goals and adjust instructional strategies as needed.

Maintain classroom discipline and order, including supervision during lunch and throughout the school day.

Perform administrative duties such as attendance taking, classroom organization, and grade recording.

Coordinate and participate in parent/teacher conferences and IEP meetings to review student performance and behavior.

Manage caseload of special education students in collaboration with the Director of Special Education.

Attend faculty meetings, training sessions, and professional development to stay current on educational best practices and intervention strategies.

Provide instruction both in-person and potentially to remote learners, as needed, adapting to changing instructional needs.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.

Valid teaching certification or license, preferably in special education or a related area.

Prior experience teaching elementary school and working with diverse student needs, including learning disabilities, behavioral challenges, and emotional disturbances.

Strong understanding of intervention strategies, behavior management techniques, and special education laws and regulations.

Proficiency in foundational reading and numeracy; experience with MTSS preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and professionals.

Ability to analyze student data for instructional decision-making and intervention planning.

Patience, compassion, and empathy in supporting students facing academic or behavioral challenges.

Strong organizational and problem-solving skills to manage multiple caseloads and documentation effectively.

Adaptability and flexibility to adjust intervention plans based on student progress and evolving needs.

Citizenship, residency, or work VISA in the United States required.
