Our Opportunity

Chewy is hiring a Full-Stack Software Engineer to work on Chewy’s Discovery Search Experience team in Seattle, WA. The Discovery Search team is responsible for a key segment of the customer’s journey across the Chewy web and mobile apps. We help customers discover products through search results, browse pages, and more. We do this by working across the stack to develop new features backed by ML/AI models. As a member of the engineering team, you will work with product, design, and data scientists to help design, develop and implement your solutions. Your contributions will shape the development of one of Chewy's fastest growing areas and give you a front row seat to shape Chewy’s future trajectory.

To be successful in the role, you will need a proven track record of being a disruptor, innovator, and forward-looking engineer. You will need to be able to operate at depth, understanding every detail of the organization’s product goals while maintaining the ability to “zoom out” and connect the dots across our technology stack. The role will have tremendous visibility in the product, technology & business organizations of Chewy.

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to the development of key customer-facing components of Chewy’s search platform, including our front-end apps, APIs, our ElasticSearch cluster, and our ML/AI ranking and relevance models.
  • Immerse yourself in imagining and providing cutting-edge solutions to large-scale information retrieval and machine learning (ML/AI) problems.
  • Evolve and grow our world-class Chewy search services, serving millions of search queries.
  • Have a relentless focus on scalability, latency, performance robustness, and cost trade-offs – especially those present in highly virtualized, elastic, cloud-based environments.
  • Apply scientific analysis and mathematical modeling techniques to predict, measure, and evaluate the consequences of designs and the ongoing success of our platform.
  • Alongside a dedicated site reliability team, support the smooth 24x7 operation of our search services.
  • Work with Engineering Leadership to drive best practices in software development, testing, and production deployment.
  • Apply vision, strategy, and thought leadership to impact Chewy, at scale.

What You’ll Need

  • 1+ years of industry experience in software development using Node/JS, Go, Java, C++, etc.
  • 1+ years of experience designing, building, deploying, operating, scaling, and evolving distributed systems for a high-volume transaction application in a 24/7 environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or the equivalent work experience.
  • Hands-on mentality and willingness to spend a significant percentage of your time writing code, designing solutions, and debugging tricky issues.
  • Solid communication skills and ability to work well in a team-based environment.
  • Be currently based in or willing to relocate to the Seattle, WA area.

Bonus

  • Experience in E-Commerce.
  • Experience operationalizing ML/AI technologies like Learning to Rank, Vector Search, LLMs, etc.
  • Experience in Web/Product search for Information Retrieval and/or working with ElasticSearch.
  • Experience with front-end development using Next.JS /React/TypeScript/GraphQL.
  • Experience working with AWS or other public cloud providers (Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Experience working within an Agile/Scrum development process.

Compensation & Benefits

Our salary range for a Software Engineer I position is $100,000.00 - $159,000.00. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant.

Non-exempt hourly team members accrue paid time off (PTO) while salaried-exempt team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Non-exempt hourly team members in Fulfillment Centers and Customer Service are also eligible for additional unplanned unpaid time off (UTO). Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
