Short Term McKinney-Vento Social Worker

The Ferguson Florissant School District is seeking two candidates for the position of a short-term McKinney-Vento Social Worker through grant funds which end on September 30, 2024.

Job Summary/Purpose

Assist with duties that fall under the McKinney-Vento Act to support displaced children and families. This position will focus on enrollment/ assessments of current and perspective students/ families who are displaced or unhoused. Individuals hired will serve as effective contact for teachers, administrators, parents and students between school, home and community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall learning experience for children.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s in Social Work.
  • Practicum experience or on-the-job experience in providing social services or counseling assistance.
  • Demonstrate effective human relations skills and understanding of principles of youth development.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students and parents in solving student problems, and in helping to resolve school/home related problems.
  • Possess means of transportation.

Duties/Responsibilites

  • Maintain close communication with the parent of students.
  • Assist in the adjustment of all students and their parents to the new school environment in Ferguson-Florissant.
  • Assist with the implementation and execution of evening outreach events to parents and students, college tours and other program opportunities for students in transition.
  • Work with schools to address bus and attendance issues.
  • Make home visits as needed in fulfilling the responsibilities noted above.
  • Support schools with cultural and diversity understanding of students.
  • Assist ELL students/parents with enrollment in FFSD.
  • Assist schools in setting up special conferences with parents on an as needed basis.
  • Assist the principal in checking truancy problems, recognizing signs of abuse/neglect, trauma and identifying issues related to poor academics and social behaviors of students.
  • Maintain files on referrals and other notes summarizing problem situations.
  • Provide crisis intervention which is geared primarily toward protecting the safety and emotional wellbeing of children.
  • Implement the Migrant and Homeless policies of the District. Serves as a contact and resource for staff for implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act.
  • Refer students and/or families requiring long-term intervention to outside resources such as social agencies, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals.
  • Perform other duties and special job tasks as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Homeless Liaison with implementing the McKinney-Vento Act under the ESSA Federal Guidelines.
  • Assist with coordinating services to increase awareness of the McKinney-Vento Act within the FFSD and community.
  • Participate in McKinney-Vento grant funded activities to increase higher education and job opportunities for students.
  • Assist displaced students and families with immediate enrollment.
  • Assess the needs and services of displaced students and families.
  • Ability to visit all school locations as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities of displaced students/families.
  • Physical stamina to handle challenging work schedules.
  • Exercises sound judgment on sensitive issues in relationship to homelessness and in areas that impact student achievement.
  • Ability to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with students, staff and families.
  • Identify and remove barriers that impede stability of academic progress of McKinney-Vento students district-wide.
  • Ability to organize, work with details and follow through.
