Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Shift Maintenance Supervisor, located at the Bay City Factory.

Job Summary:

The Shift Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for management and supervision of asset reliability, capacity assurance, planning, R&M budget and to support leadership with all factory maintenance operations, including equipment safety, machine uptime, productivity and continuous improvement of plant equipment. The Shift Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for proper operation and performance of the Utility and Waste Water Treatment systems.

The Shift Maintenance Supervisor directs and oversees all Union Maintenance, Storeroom, Wastewater Treatment, and Utilities personnel. This position supports hiring within the maintenance and utility departments and provides technical expertise and development to hourly employees.

During annual shut down repair periods the Maintenance team conducts equipment inspections, repair and replacements, equipment improvements, capital project installation, reassembly, and post maintenance testing and validation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Educate, train and enforce human safety, food safety, and environmental compliance policies and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, food contamination, and environmental exceedances.
  • Verify shift employees time is entered correctly in ADP time keeping system.
  • Supervise operation and performance of waste-water ponds and treatment systems.
  • Supervise operation and performance of plant boiler, power generation, and compressed air Utility systems.
  • Supervise a team of maintenance technicians, providing guidance, support, and direction as needed.
  • Assign tasks and prioritize maintenance activities to ensure timely completion of work orders and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment, machinery, and facilities to identify maintenance needs and address issues promptly.
  • Coordinate with other departments to determine maintenance priorities to minimize downtime while achieving the highest level of proactive work execution.
  • Collaborate with management to develop and implement strategies for improving asset health, effectiveness and efficiency by recommending and implementing continuous improvements to extend mean time between failure, improve uptime, and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to maintain assets in a precision state to extend the lifespan of equipment and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Train and mentor maintenance, waste water treatment, and utility staff on best practices, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment logs, and inventory.
  • Monitor inventory levels of spare parts and equipment and reorder as necessary to ensure uninterrupted maintenance operations.
  • On-call 24/7 for emergency response of all equipment issues.
  • Effectively utilize Advanced Maintenance Management System (AMMS) computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for cost and performance tracking.
  • Identify and implement training and development for the Union workforce to ensure employee growth and progression.
  • Ability to work across department lines in regards to internal quality/compliance audits.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred (Engineering preferred).
  • Alternatively, either a technical associate’s degree with 3+ years industrial experience or 5+ years industrial experience with demonstrated progressive maintenance or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Training or related experience in human safety, quality assurance systems, FSMA food safety, quality management, environmental safety, and supervision and leadership development.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and knowledge of plant process systems and chemical processes.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Proficiency in using maintenance management software and other computerized systems.

Required Training upon hiring:

  • General factory safety requirements (Right to Know)
  • Food-related Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
  • Factory-related environmental regulations
  • SQF certification – principles or SQF
  • Knowledge of GMP + standards
