Sheriff's Detention Deputy Trainee

Are you interested in a career in law enforcement or public safety? The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is seeking Sheriff's Detention Deputy Trainees to join the team! As a Trainee Detention Deputy, you will utilize your interpersonal communication skills to supervise detainees in a pretrial detention facility. You will also be responsible for maintaining security of the facility and ensuring the safety of all inmates, staff members, and visitors.

Location and hours:

This position is located at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility at 401 South 4th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55415 in downtown Minneapolis. The position requires working a flexible schedule including days, evenings, overnights, on-call, weekends, and holidays. Shifts will be 12 hours with work hours being either 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

This is a limited duration (temporary), full-time benefit earning position that may last up to two years.

This position is internally classified as a Trainee Sheriff's Detention Deputy.

In This Position, You Will

  • Successfully train and work on the job towards meeting the minimum qualifications for Detention Deputy .
  • Fingerprint, secure, and release inmates.
  • Conduct roll call and complete mandatory health and welfare checks on inmates.
  • Search and inventory property.
  • Conduct physical searches of inmates.
  • Supervise custody of inmates and visitation; staff control rooms; conduct frequent security checks.
  • Maintain records on inmates; prepare jail incident reports.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including the need to use physical force and/or provide basic emergency medical care.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the facility.

Need To Have

  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Able and willing to work with inmates who are hostile and difficult at times.
  • Successfully complete the six (6) week classroom and six (6) weeks on the job training portion of the program.

Nice to have:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Sensitivity to issues involving race and ethnic diversity and experience communicating orally with people of limited English skills.
  • An interest in an adult detention, corrections and or/public safety career.
  • Willingness to work forty (40) hours per week with the possibility of paid overtime in the Adult Detention division.
  • Ability to complete the program within two calendar years (24 months).

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office serves the county's 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriff's office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.

Applicants must have no felony convictions and must successfully complete a drug test, extensive background investigation, and a pre-employment physical and psychological assessment prior to employment.

Requirements

Candidates will need to pass a comprehensive medical examination prior to appointment to ascertain candidate's ability to perform essential job functions. The general medical requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 in each eye.
  • Corrected vision of at least 20/40 in each eye.
  • Meeting normal hearing standards.
  • Must not have any respiratory impairment.
