Position Summary: In preparation for potential activations resulting from disaster events, we are building our team and anticipate having opportunities for Shelter Managers. The Shelter Manager oversees shelter operations when shelters are activated to assist residents impacted by disasters. This position is an operational assignment responsible for planning, implementing, overseeing, and supporting the operation of client shelters across the disaster relief operation. The Shelter Manager leads the Shift Supervisor and Shelter teams, and supervises workers assigned to specific shelter tasks and areas of the shelter operation such as Registration Supervisor, Dormitory Supervisor and Recreation Supervisor (General Shelter Workers).
Job Duties and Responsibilities include:
Leads and supports shelter staff with guidance, and allocation of resources to effectively operate shelters to meet priorities, objectives, and standards
Advises leadership on sheltering needs, trends, and issues.
Attends Daily Sheltering Coordination Meeting
Works collaboratively with all functions that support sheltering
Maintains alignment of all shelters to current sheltering standards and current procedures
Supports advanced operational planning and development of service delivery plan
May lead a team of administrative staff to effectively support all assigned sheltering workforce, shelters, and provide mentorship to staff
Supports the operation of workforce shelters working jointly with Staff Services
May include supervising the delivery of services and assigned workers in one or more of the following areas within the shelter: reception, registration, dormitory, feeding, information, and supply.
Ensures work is carried out in alignment with established shelter principles and practices
Accurately records time worked on all activities in time tracking system of record daily
Ensures accurate reporting to meet the client’s needs
Reviews the team’s time entries and time comments for accuracy
Ensures the team’s quality meets the established expectations
Provides coaching, mentoring, and shelter specific training as required for team members.
Monitors activities in the shelter and alert Shelter Management to issues and concerns.
Participates in all shelter staff meetings and reviews and completes daily reports.
Completes all required training necessary to remain proficient
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
Have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the social services and/or healthcare fields and must have the following abilities:
Able to follow procedures and job tools including reporting requirements
Able to interact with community members in a clear, compassionate manner, respectful of diversity and unique needs
Able to involve appropriate others in managing problems and conflict
Able to acquire, evaluate, and report information accurately
Able to lift / carry 20 lbs. multiple times/shifts
Able to stand and or sit for two-hour periods
Able to bend or stoop multiple times
Able to step up/down 18 inches and climb two or more flights of stairs
Able to speak clearly on phone and in person
Able to drive in daytime and at night
Able to work outdoors in inclement weather, extreme heat and/or humidity and/or extreme cold
Able to function in a dynamic and stressful environment with little or no supervision, adapting to change, negotiating compromise, and tolerating ambiguity
Able to participate and contribute to regular meetings
Must have good organizational skills and be accountable
Must have active listening skills
Able to work well with others
Maintains familiarity with current standards, procedures, doctrine bulletins and best practices through regular participation in sheltering management cadre activities
Ability to accomplish all responsibilities outlined in the Job Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills
Ability to resolve issues, escalate challenges and request support as needed
Ability to pass a drug screen.
Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English.
Required Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the social services and/or healthcare fields
Experienced leading, directing and evaluating shelter workers.
Experienced handling time sensitive issues that may arise in your area of responsibility.
Valid Driver’s License
Minimum 18 years of age
Prior experience in disaster recovery (CDBG-DR or FEMA Programs) or mitigation is an asset, preferred
Prior experience handling and solving customer complaints, preferred.
On-site in Florida at locations impacted by disasters.
All project staff must pass a level 1 background screening for employment.
Due to the nature of the work and impacts of the incident, staff will be required to lodge at the assigned shelter and may transition to nearby base camps when available. Local hires may have permission to reside at their permanent residential address.
