Senior Staff Editor, Kids (Temporary)

Job Description

The New York Times for Kids is looking for a senior staff editor to join our small team. First published in May 2017, NYT Kids is a beloved monthly print section that helps young readers understand the world at large and meets them where they are. You have experience assigning, editing and packaging short-form journalism (experience with kid content is not a prerequisite). An ability to work across and within teams and experience with working closely with design are all keys to success in this job. You will report to the Editorial Director of The New York Times for Kids and be a primary member of our edit team.

You will work a hybrid schedule working three days a week from the New York City office at 620 8th Avenue.

Responsibilities


  • Brainstorm creative, and timely stories for kids, especially those that take advantage of the broadsheet and go beyond a standard writethrough
  • Plan issue lineups with the editorial director
  • Assign and edit multiple pages of the monthly section
  • Collaborate with the art and photo departments to prioritize visual storytelling
  • Shepherd articles from idea to completion, while working with the editorial, art, photo, copyediting, production and research teams
  • Develop and include a wide range of voices
  • Plan and participate in classroom visits, special events, Instagram brainstorming,, partnerships with other New York Times desks and other editorial NYT Kids-adjacent projects
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.


Basic Qualifications


  • 5+ years of experience as an assigning editor: You have experience managing multiple assignments at once and seeing stories from start to finish
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with a pool of freelance writers
  • Experience working closely and collaboratively with design and photo departments
  • Enthusiastic idea generation
  • Magazine front-of-book and package editing experience
  • Brainstorm creative ways to translate print stories into social media posts, and generating ideas for Instagram content
  • Strong news judgment and a broad knowledge in current events and daily news journalism
  • Prior experience editing kids content is not necessary, but you should feel strongly about speaking to kids as equals; clear and conversational language should come naturally

  • An eagerness to discover what kids are interested in.
  • Understanding of Times’ standards of journalistic excellence and truthfulness

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.16 and $125,000.00.
