Senior Product Manager

SENIOR PRODUCT MANAGER, PAIN PLATFORM, PART-TIME CONTRACTOR

STANFORD UNIVERSITY, DIVISION OF PAIN MEDICINE

The Stanford Division of Pain Medicine merges the three-part mission of clinical care, education, and research to advance the frontier of pain management for those dealing with acute or chronic pain problems.

Chronic pain, in particular, is a condition that affects 50-100M people in the United States alone, with a cost exceeding half a trillion dollars per year. The understanding of chronic pain is still in its infancy, despite its pervasiveness, particularly across different pain conditions and population groups (e.g. sex, race, geography). Treatments are often few, and of limited and variable effect depending on the individual, their pain condition, and situation. Further, comprehensive treatments are typically confined to large academic medical centers, with much of the US in a healthcare desert. Finally, after 17 years, only 14% of research has led to widespread changes in care.

We envision a world where every chronic pain sufferer can find the best therapies for their condition and context. To this end, we are building a Pain Platform to enable faster research in real-world people with chronic pain, translating that research into effective therapies, and working with clinicians and their patients to better understand, monitor, and treat pain conditions. The first step in creating this platform is a clinician-facing service that enables faster collection and understanding of patient data, which we know to be a key leverage point in the development and management of chronic pain treatment.

This project is in early stages, and we are seeking a Senior PM contractor, part-time, for 6 months to shape and define this clinician-facing service, in partnership with Stanford researchers, engineers, and clinicians. The goal at the end of 6 months would be to have an interface design and set of well-defined features that has product market fit and has been tested with dozens of pain clinicians, along with an initial v1 implementation and roadmap for future iterations. While this role is set up for 6 months, there is an option for renewal at the end of that time or conversion to a part-time or full-time role.

  • Gather a deep understanding of pain clinicians, including their needs, workflow, challenges, etc. with respect to gathering patient data, generating reports, and recommending therapies.
  • Market-test features and ideas for this service, iterating as needed to create a compelling offering that can address their needs and integrate seamlessly into their workflow.
  • Investigate potential revenue models, such as CPT codes, and pressure-test workflows in the market.
  • Partner with engineering to build a v1, launchable version of this service to at least a dozen clinicians, both inside and outside of Stanford. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to manage milestones and deliver on a timely basis.
