Job Brief

The Senior Process Engineer on the Process Engineering team will be responsible for developing and applying a combination of process simulation flowsheets and fundamentals-based models to support the development and scale-up of our process technology. This position reports to the Process Modeling Team Lead.

This role is a remote position. Periodic travel to our Oakland, California lab or other locations may be required.

Key Focus Areas of the role may include:

  • Develop and validate process and unit operation models to support pilot and demonstration plant development and operation and de-risk technology scale-up
  • Identify data gaps/needs and work with experimental teams and other engineers and scientists to design experiments, interpret results, and incorporate learnings into models
  • Support techno-economic and life cycle assessments through process modeling, equipment sizing/costing, etc
  • Evaluate potential process improvements for viability, including alternative process steps and unit operations
  • Participate in engineering design activities for pilot and demonstration plants, including developing process flow and instrumentation diagrams, preparing documentation, and interacting with vendors and EPC firms
  • Perform technical communications to key stakeholders, including oral presentations and written reports


For this role, we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering or equivalent; Master's, or PhD degree preferred
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • 3+ years of process modeling experience in a relevant industry, using process simulation tools such as Aspen Plus/HYSYS, PRO/II, Metsim, or similar
  • Deep understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals: thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics, mass and energy balances, unit operation design
  • Experience with design and engineering of novel processes at pilot, demonstration, and commercial plant scales
  • Familiarity bridging process simulation with actual equipment, process, and plant design
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time


Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

  • Experience in fields such as chemical processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, mineral processing, and cement production
  • Experience performing techno-economic and life cycle assessments for novel chemical processes
  • Experience writing code in Python, MATLAB, or a similar programming language

  • Salary range for this role is $140,000-175,000 / year
