Senior Power Trader

Piper Maddox have partnered with an Energy Trading firm, who is looking to hire an experienced energy trader to be based in their Houston office.

About the Company

This leading North American energy trading firm actively buys and sells electricity, natural gas, and environmental products across the US. They participate in all major power trading markets, including CAISO, IESO, ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, MISO, SPP, AESO, and ERCOT.

The Opportunity

The company is seeking a talented financial power trader to join their growing US-based team. This role focuses on proprietary trading of short-term financial products, primarily in the PJM and MISO markets.

Responsibilities

• Execute trades in proprietary short-term financial power and gas products.
• Conduct in-depth analysis and fundamental research related to the Eastern Interconnect markets, including PJM and MISO.
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues to share market insights and perspectives.
• Partner with the Origination team to price and manage structured deals as needed.
• Work closely with Compliance, Risk, and Credit teams to ensure adherence to governance and control protocols.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from a reputable university in a relevant field such as Economics, Business, Engineering, Statistics, or Mathematics.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience trading physical or financial power products.
• Solid understanding of power and gas fundamentals within the Eastern Interconnect.
• Proficient knowledge of market rules and tariffs governing RTOs/ISOs in the Eastern Interconnect.
• Self-motivated and thrives in a fast-paced, high-pressure trading environment.

Skills

• Prior experience in proprietary trading is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with managing power assets is a plus.
• Experience trading virtual and UPTO products is considered an asset.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills are essential.
• Programming experience in Python, VBA, or SQL is a plus.
• Proficiency in data science tools like Tableau, R, or Power BI is desirable.
