Independently performs moderately difficult to difficult plumbing, piping, HVAC and fire protection design assignments which require the application of advanced design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. Most assignments are performed independently with only minimal guidance. This is the senior-level design position.

Requirements

  • Normally requires a candidate to have high school graduate with vo-tech training in basic drafting technology and typically 13-14 years’ related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience), or a 2-year degree in drafting/design technology and 11-12 years’ related experience.
  • Must demonstrate a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input and a proficiency in utilizing manual and computer-assisted techniques for difficult design applications.

  • Establishes design criteria for assigned phases of a project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, material properties, and a familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Helps lead engineer to provide conceptual input for projects during the planning stages and assists him/her to define the projects’ scope of work.
  • Prepares detail and layout drawings and sketches of unusual, complex, or original designs requiring the application of theoretical and practical engineering knowledge. Assignments regularly include determining material needs and performing necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references.
  • Reviews manufacturers’ or fabricators’ prints for conformance with spatial conformity to proposed design layout. Provides lower-level design/drafting personnel with design sketches for preparation of finished engineering drawings, general layouts, and guidance in refining technical requirements.
  • Supports field assignments required as well as assists field forces in resolving minor mechanical and spatial conformity problems.
  • Regularly interfaces with other departments, vendors, and project engineers in order to support project production and to ensure that conflicts and interferences with other disciplines are avoided.
  • Performs other related tasks in support of project engineer that are non-routine and complex in nature, such as writing procedures and specifications; analyzing bids; compiling, computing, and analyzing various engineering design and/or test data; estimating; etc.
  • Performs certain administrative tasks, such as establishing drawing schedules, assigning tasks to lower-level design/drafting personnel, etc. Most importantly has the responsibility for ensuring that project completion schedules are met.
  • Provides technical guidance to lower-level design/drafting personnel and reviews completed assignments for accuracy.
