The Atlantic is seeking an experienced editor to join the newsroom. This editor will be assigned to the Culture desk, and will focus on coverage of how we live—including stories about family, relationships of all kinds, and cultural trends both online and in the material world. This position is full-time.
The ideal candidate will be versatile, highly organized, well-versed in magazine journalism, and relentlessly curious about human behavior and the forces that shape society. On any given day, you might be editing a critical essay about changing depictions of dads in pop culture, a closely researched personal story about a family mystery, a newsy analysis of the economics of high-profile divorces, an essay about how friendship, not romance, could be at the center of our lives, or a deeply reported narrative or profile, from either staff or freelance writers. Editing reported features is a key part of this role, so there will be stretches of time when you’re immersed in one big story. You should be comfortable assigning and editing stories about how culture and family interact with the most pressing questions of our day, across politics, technology, and business.
We’re looking for someone who sees potential stories everywhere, understands how to shape big ideas and arguments, and can bring them to life in an elegant, rigorous, and eminently readable way. You’ll be involved in the entire editing process, from idea generation to publication. You’ll oversee writers and possibly editors, and work alongside other editors on the desk to coordinate short- and long-term story planning. This role will also include opportunities for writing, if of interest, that contributes to the team’s coverage areas.
Qualifications Of The Ideal Candidate
Strong experience as an assigning editor, including of features and narrative reporting
Demonstrated interest in human behavior and the forces that shape our lives, with a nuanced, sharply calibrated sensibility about cultural trends
Facility with studies and statistics
Deep familiarity with The Atlantic
Experience as an editorial manager who can deliver constructive feedback and oversee staffers’ development
Impeccable news judgment and an eye for argument and stylish execution
A track record of working with, and generating ideas with, high-level writers
Sophisticated writing skills, with a facility for identifying compelling ideas and communicating them to a general-interest audience
Openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives
An ability to work quickly, switch gears as needed, and meet deadlines
Close attention to detail and high standards for accuracy
A collaborative spirit, and an ability to communicate effectively both up and down, and across different departments
This job is based at The Atlantic’s offices in either New York City or Washington, D.C.
Salary Minimum: $100K, Salary Maximum: $160K
