Purpose of this Role
The Senior Director of Education Initiatives oversees United Way’s current early learning programs as well as other potential education related initiatives. In this role, the Senior Director will play a convening, facilitating, advocacy, and leadership role at a local, regional and state level – building trust and strong relationships with diverse stakeholders; facilitating planning, decisions, and action; fostering constant communication; connecting and aligning strategies and resources; cultivating an environment that measures and makes progress on identified outcomes through the use of shared data, measurement, and accountability; responding to and exploring new education related opportunities and performing other duties as assigned by the Chief Impact Officer. This will require significant and consistent coordination with the Early Learning Multnomah and the Early Learning Washington County Directors.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of some early morning, evening, and
weekend work.
Key Accountabilities
Strategic Alignment of Programs, Strategies, and Resources
Within identified United Way geographic priority areas, work with the Early Learning Multnomah and Early Learning Washington City Directors as well as other regional stakeholders to develop mutually reinforcing strategies for reaching and impacting key communities by connecting and aligning strategically with all available programs, assets, people, and resources
Proactively develop and support regionally focused strategies that engage area stakeholders on key issues (e.g., parenting education, workforce development, partnership with Coordinating Care Organizations, etc.).
Support the creation and implementation of county-wide assessments and action plans (as required by the state and local partnerships) as well as alignment and coordination across county lines.
Advocate to local, state and federal agencies and organizations for funding, partnerships and policies that will benefit children, youth and families.
Represent United Way in the implementation of Preschool for All in Multnomah and similar initiatives in Clackamas, Clark and Washington counties.
Represent United Way in national cohorts with an early childhood policy focus
Coordinate United Way involvement and representation in advocacy coalitions at national, state and local levels
Establish an environment of mutual trust and accountability for results by assuring that reliable data is available and used by United Way and partners throughout our work
Ensure United Way meets all contract specifications and performance standards set by the state
Work collaboratively with the Community Impact, Marketing, and Resource Development teams
Communicate the impact of UWCW initiatives to corporate and individual donors as well as the broader community
Explore, analyze and introduce new programmatic opportunities in early learning and more broadly in education.
Staff Leadership and Development
Select, guide, motivate, and participate in the training, professional development, and evaluation of direct reports
Work with the team to provide goal-setting, visioning, leadership, and strategic direction for all education focused team members
Ensure that team members are invested in team activities and decisions, and that the team works together to achieve organizational goals
Responsible for accurate and timely completion and/or approval of organizational documents, including but not limited to performance reviews, professional development plans, goals and objectives, timecards, expense and travel reimbursements, credit card reports, requisitions, and ongoing documentation of performance accomplishments and areas requiring improvement
Play an “adaptive leadership” role within the Community Impact Department and across collaborative, cross-sector partnerships to establish a shared commitment to the United Way and our community’s vision
Serves as a member of UWCW’s Senior Leadership Team.

Education, Skills, Experience, And Training Required For This Position
Minimum 10 years related work experience in the human service field, with program development, administration, and fiscal oversight; BA degree or a comparable combination of experience and education
3+ years of supervisory skills and experience
Existing understanding of and experience working within the early learning community
Knowledge of the education field including, but not limited to early learning.
Experience leading a collaborative effort involving a variety of diverse stakeholders
Experience working on early learning within the four-county region preferred
Effective oral and written communications skills with an ability to relate with a diverse group of individuals or organizations in an effective manner
Ability to think strategically with proven, strong ability to execute on plan
Ability to take initiative and be creative in thinking and solutions
High-energy individual with a positive outlook
Manage expectations of internal team members effectively and a strong desire and aptitude to be part of a team environment
