Job Description

We are seeking a battery energy storage systems leader to head our efforts for both the commercial and technical aspects of energy storage for Apex Clean Energy. This is an exciting opportunity to execute a business plan that affirms the Apex brand in the energy storage space. We are seeking a driven, passionate, experienced professional to help Apex mature our storage strategy and expand our abilities to deliver our broad expertise to new and developing energy markets. This role reports directly to the Executive Vice President, Project Delivery and will be responsible for driving Apex’s energy storage strategy, creating a multi-year roadmap, and ensuring the delivery of projects from early-stage strategies through commercial execution. Our ideal team member is a creative and goal-oriented energy storage expert, with a proven track record for strategy, market analysis, design, execution and delivery of innovative and professional projects. As a senior member of the team, you will also provide oversight for projects, interdepartmental collaboration, and team management.

This position requires excellent communication and project management skills, extensive partnership with both internal and external stakeholders, as well as the ability to work well under pressure, multitask, and shift priorities on the go. The successful candidate is an experienced leader eager to make the move to a fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization with trajectory for growth.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead implementation of the Apex company strategy for deployment of energy storage systems (ESS) alongside the portfolio of utility scale and distributed wind and solar energy assets across most ISO/RTO regions in the United States.
  • Monitor the ESS markets as it continues to evolve dynamically, recommending updates to Apex’s strategy as the market evolves.
  • Determine and communicate highest-value use cases and lead commercialization efforts through overseeing offtake strategies or partnership opportunities.
  • Design the use-case and provide cost estimates for ESS systems to support proposals to customers.
  • Oversee / coordinate all ESS-specific modeling assumptions, including revenue, CAPEX, OPEX, and sources of capital for ESS systems.
  • Partner with the Apex procurement team to maintain relationships with vendors and ensure procured equipment fits within overall business execution plans.
  • Support the Project Management and Asset Management teams as needed to ensure quality control of facilities and delivered services.
  • Maintain a strong network of industry related contacts for the purpose of expanding storage opportunities and services.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of experienced professionals to ensure they are motivated, engaged, and equipped with the necessary skills to perform their roles effectively.
  • Collaborate with team members to establish clear objectives, develop strategies, and set realistic goals aligned with the overall organizational objectives.
  • Manage resources efficiently, including budget allocation, project timelines, and staffing needs, to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget constraints.
  • Regularly assess team performance, provide constructive feedback, and implement performance improvement plans when necessary to maintain high standards of productivity and quality of work.
  • Foster a culture of open communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing within the team and across departments to ensure alignment and effective coordination on projects and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years direct professional work experience within the renewable energy industry, with a primary focus on BESS
  • Demonstrated success in leading successful teams and operational strategies for BESS
  • PMP certification preferred
  • Ability to foster cohesive teamwork that delivers best-in-class service to clients.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Highly organized; able to juggle competing demands and follow through on deliverables with minimal supervision.
  • Professional presence with strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Builds trust by demonstrating high ethical standards and personal integrity.
  • Analytical problem solver who views obstacles as challenges.
  • Creative thinker who values innovation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word).

Additional Information

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
