Senior Deputy District Attorney

Job Description

Acts on authority delegated by the district attorney to represent the Commonwealth and the County in the prosecutions of those persons who are alleged to have violated the law of the Commonwealth within the County.

Position Information

Starting Salary: Based on Amount of Previous Experience. Please reference the starting salaries below.

Senior Attorney III – Grade 120 – Starting at $94,399.50

Senior Attorney II – Grade 118 – Starting at $84,006.00

Senior Attorney I – Grade 117 – Starting at $79,267.50

Attorney II – Grade 116 – Starting at $74,763.00

Attorney I – Grade 113 – Starting at $62,790.00

Work Hours: This position will work and be paid for 75 hours in a 2 week pay period

Responsibilities

Upon authority delegated by the District Attorney:

  • Performs the duties of an assistant district attorney, which include:
    • Assists police in the investigation of criminal offenses.
    • Provides legal opinions to police relative to investigations.
    • Conducts legal research and writes opinions thereon.
    • Advises police on the drafting of criminal complaints, search warrants and statements of probable cause.
    • Evaluates evidence relative to propriety of criminal charges and search warrants.
    • Review and sign criminal information.
    • Assembles and evaluates evidence, interviews, and prepares witnesses for various court appearances.
    • Represents the Commonwealth in the prosecution of cases at preliminary hearing, pretrial motions, pre-trial conferences, trials before court and/or jury, post-verdict motions and appeals to Superior and Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania.
    • Interacts with all other state and local law enforcement agencies and local individuals and organization.
    • Uphold all ethical duties to seek justice in all cases.
    • Provide community prosecution out-reach to assigned police jurisdictions.
    • Perform special duties as assigned by the District Attorney.
    • Attends continuing education courses on law enforcement and related issues.
    • Attends meetings, seminars and training sessions as required.
    • Provides public service work within the County, e.g., participates in mock trials for edification of the public.
    • Performs other job-related work as assigned by the district attorney.
Qualifications

  • Juris doctor degree and admission to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
  • Some computer training is helpful.
  • Continuing legal education is required.
  • Attorney with seven plus years of relevant experience.
  • Experience leading a specialized program area.
  • Possesses the necessary trial experience and leadership abilities to oversee/mentor other staff attorneys.
  • Must be qualified to be lead prosecutor on a Death Penalty prosecution.
