Position Overview

Marlborough School seeks an experienced, innovative, and engaged Senior Accountant to assist with the School’s general accounting functions. The position oversees the reconciliation and completion of general ledger accounts and assists with the administration of the School’s various financial audits and tax workpapers, including preparation of financial statements and School operations reports, as well as completing the accounting for more complex accounting areas. The Senior Accountant is part of a collaborative team of accountants and business professionals and is responsible for overseeing the work of the Staff Accountants by providing guidance when needed, reviewing all completed work, and ensuring timely completion of work. This full-time exempt position reports directly to the Controller & Business Manager.

The individual must have a strong accounting background with prior supervisory experience. Preference will be given to candidates who are a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA). The individual must also possess the following characteristics: self-motivated; strategic thinker; and an effective team player. The position may require overtime, evening and weekend work as needed.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists in overall general ledger maintenance and management.
  • Reviews and approves all journal entries prepared by Staff Accountants.
  • Responsible for monthly recurring journal entries of more complex accounting areas, including but not limited to fixed assets, prepaids, investments, and deferred revenue.
  • Works collaboratively with Staff Accountants and offers assistance and guidance as needed.
  • Manages accounting processes and procedures, with constant attention to efficiency and accuracy.


Financial Reporting

  • Assists Controller & Business Manager in preparation of the School’s financial statements and tax reporting, including coordination with the School’s independent auditors.
  • Assists Controller & Business Manager with preparation of the School’s operating statements.
  • Assists Controller & Business Manager with preparation of annual budget and related schedules.
  • Assists Controller & Business Manager with monitoring department budgets and identifying budget discrepancies and overruns.
  • Prepares statistical reports and information as needed.


Reconciliations

  • Reconciles investment accounts and prepares journal activity monthly.
  • Reconciles Temporarily Restricted and Permanently Restricted Assets quarterly.
  • Reviews and approves all reconciliations prepared by the Staff Accountants (bank, development, tuition, etc.).
  • Prepares year-end reconciliations as needed.


Other Projects:

  • Provides support to the Controller & Business Manager, the Associate Head for Finance & Administration, and other senior administrators as needed.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in Accounting required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), particularly in non-profit accounting.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the accounting field, preferably in the independent school or non-profit sector.
  • Experience in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, Tuition Management, and Fundriver preferred.
  • Proficient in G-Suite applications and Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and accomplish goals.
  • Highly organized with an ability to demonstrate success both independently and in collaborative groups.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a deadline driven and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; customer service focus; resourceful problem solver; high level of discretion and proven record of maintaining confidentiality and sound judgment.
  • Professional decorum is essential due to regular interaction with parents, faculty, administrators, and business partners.
