Job Title: Secondary Special Education Coach

Reports to: Campus Principal

Dept/School: Teaching and Learning /Independence High School

Work Year: 184 days

Base Salary: Teacher Pay Scale + Stipend

Primary Purpose

FISD Secondary Instructional Coaches are teacher leaders who increase the professional capacity of teachers through job-embedded professional development on high school and middle school campuses. Instructional Coaches are expert teachers who instruct classes of students while also acting as professional learning facilitators to grow teacher capacity at the campus level.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Secondary teaching certificate

Special Education Certification required

Master’s Degree preferred

ESL Certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

Campus leadership experience preferred

Experience Facilitating Professional Learning Preferred

Extensive training in the curriculum and instructional strategies

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others

Experience

Minimum of three years of classroom experience in the content area and level preferred

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Collaborate with campus/district leaders and colleagues in order to promote continuous improvement at the classroom level, ensuring high levels of learning for all students.

Support the implementation of state standards by developing teacher understanding of TEKS, power standards, FISD curriculum, and instructional practices.

Support department teacher teams in planning processes and instruction aligned to the four critical questions of a professional learning community.

Support, communicate, and model district priorities. Assist district and campus administration in identifying areas for growth.

Collaborate regularly with central office content coordinator and campus supervising administrator to ensure coaching impacts student performance.

Collaborate with Curriculum and Instruction staff to plan and facilitate professional learning sessions. Facilitate formal and informal professional learning on content and strategies to content area campus teachers.

Increase the quality and effectiveness of classroom instruction through collaborating, co-planning and completing coaching cycle protocols.

Foster trusting relationships with staff.

Assist in implementation of evidence-based teaching strategies in classrooms.

Assist teacher teams in interpreting formative and summative assessment data and using assessment information to adjust instruction.

Exhibit non-evaluative growth mindset and utilize coaching skills to help teachers and teams evaluate progress and set action steps for continuous improvement.

Exhibit a high level of ethics and confidentiality in regards to student and teacher records and classroom performance.

Attend professional learning sessions to increase coaching skills; these may occur during the school year or summer.

Attend monthly instructional coach meetings.

Serve as department head by effectively organizing materials, sharing information, and other departmental logistics.

Other Duties As Assigned

Working Conditions

Most department head duties (operational management of the department) are completed outside the normal school day. One instructional coach period (non-teaching period) is provided each school day that provides time to support teachers within the department.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

The SPED coach must maintain emotional control under stress, as well as be very flexible to meet the needs of the staff members in their department. The duties may be physically demanding - moving between rooms, organizing, storing, and distribution of content specific materials, and moving media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
