Title: School Nutrition Services Area Supervisor

Reports to: School Nutrition Director

Terms of Employment: 12 Months

Salary: OFF12E-72

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Supervises up to and including 36 different school nutrition programs of designated schools within DCS. To maintain the highest local, state, and federal standards while communicating with all individuals impacted by the program efficiently and effectively.

Essential Job Functions

Must be qualified and able to perform the responsibilities and tasks of the position to accurately read, interpret and comply with DCS and department procedures; provide attention to detail, and to minimize errors; and extensive knowledge of personal computers including a proficiency in Windows based programs, spreadsheets, database software; excellent communication and organizational skills; familiarity with continuous improvement processes desired; general knowledge of OSHA requirements for field positions; working knowledge of basic principles of nutrition, quantity food production, financial accounting system for fiscal control, and food service equipment; ability to maintain proper records and accountability procedure; and considerable knowledge of equipment use and care in food service facilities.

  • Supervises child nutrition programs of designated schools which includes food production and service; purchasing, storage, and inventory of supplies and equipment; facility management, sanitation, and safety; and nutrition education
  • Provide support and follow-up with school child nutrition managers on fiscal management
  • Assess the effectiveness of programs and providing recommendations for improvement
  • Evaluate programs and SNS managers of designated schools
  • Assists with training of SNS managers and assistants
  • Maintains primary responsibility for one or more SNS central program functions such as menu planning, product evaluation, nutrition education, vending, and marketing
  • Provides periodic reports and findings on the SNS program within DCS to SNS Director
  • Provides support to SNS managers to help meet the federal and state guidelines and the requirements of the SNS program
  • Serves as liaison between designated schools and School Nutrition Services (SNS)
  • Manage personnel
  • Provide input and may manage the work area budget
  • Review for accuracy and consistency of all documents for publication
  • Manage concise and consistent information in a timely manner
  • Facilitate and utilize continuous improvement practices
  • Ensure DCS procedure and policy compliance and application of sound business principles
  • Maintain a highly motivated staff by providing a healthy and safe work environment and by communicating with employees in an honest, fair, and timely manner using sound judgment
  • Utilize the computerized management system(s) within DCS to effectively manage work and track performance
  • Collaborate with other DCS departments as needed to identify needs and foster teamwork
  • Responsible for providing input to staff selection, placement, development, training and performance management
  • Promote positive reinforcement by valuing individual and work group contributions to increase a sense of teamwork
  • Creates an open work environment that fosters positive and open exchange of ideas and differing opinions
  • Responsible for serving as back-up manager and/or school nutrition assistant, as staffing vacancies/absences require.

Minimum Training Ane Experience

  • Education: Associates or Bachelors degree in food management, business or related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years experience in food service and supervision, five or more years is preferred.
  • Other Requirements: Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of NC requirements. Must have current food safety certificate or be willing to obtain within 30 days of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Office space is provided. Visits to schools and other sites are also required with possible exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, and pollen, insects and housekeeping chemicals. Requires bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders. Some hours are spent performing work produced on a computer screen

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Some positions assigned to this class may require light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
