Position Summary

With supervision and guidance from the District’s Executive Director of Student Services and building administration, the Pre-K through 12 school nurse will protect the health status of students by identifying and assisting in the removal or modification of health-related barriers which impede the learning process. Also, focus will be on the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Promotes and protect the optimal health status of students
  • Provides health assessments
    • Obtain a health and development history
    • Screen and evaluate findings of deficits in vision, hearing, etc.
    • Observe the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis
  • Implements a health plan
    • Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel
    • Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through
    • Provide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies
    • Recommend and help to implement modifications of school programs to meet students’ health needs
    • Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care for students
  • Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
  • Participates as the health specialist on a student’s education evaluation team to develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and CARE team plans where needed
  • Plans and implements school health management protocols for students, including the administration of medication
  • Develops procedures and provides for crises intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbances
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases
  • Provides health education
    • Teach parenting skills as they relate to the development and health needs of students
    • Provide direct health education and health counseling to students and families who are making decisions on health and lifestyle issues
    • Participate in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health. Counsel with adolescents concerning problems such as teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and drug abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making
  • Coordinates school and community health activities and serve as a liaison person between the home, school and community
  • Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
  • Facilitates and monitors the Medicaid Logging at the building level
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Services and building administration

  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to operate computer programs and related technology for District employees
  • Knowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing, and other appropriate health screening activities
  • Knowledge of and experience with principles and theories of adult learning for effective staff development and in-service activities
  • Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to organize, maintain and report data and information related to health services
  • Ability to use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of programs, the coordination of committees, and to maintain productive relationships with colleagues, school personnel, parents, community resources, other health professionals, and students
  • Knowledge of Board policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel, and schools necessary for the efficient and effective processing of communications, requesting of needed information, and implementation of the school nursing programs
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment
  • Ability to travel between the schools throughout the school district

Essential Qualifications

The qualifications noted below are required to enable the employee to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of this position.

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university (BSN) REQUIRED
  • Minimum of two years’ nursing experience in one or more areas, including community or public health, pediatrics, emergency room and individuals with disabilities
  • Previous nursing experience in an urban environment
  • Ability to foster positive rapport with administration, staff, students and parents
  • Ability to diffuse and resolve conflict

  • Sufficient vision to read printed material, see distant objects with clarity, and identify and distinguish objects
  • Sufficient hearing to hear conversations in person and on the telephone, and hear sounds clearly up to 30 feet
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation and on the telephone, and in addressing groups
  • Ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • This position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time
  • Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment and move about the work area
  • This position will subject the employee to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, high noise levels, and various work-related hazards
