Job Summary:

Under the administrative supervision of the Director of the Trone Center for Mental Fitness, the Same Day Mental Health Counselor provides immediate, short-term mental health support to students seeking urgent/same day assistance. This role involves conducting assessments, offering brief interventions, and referring students to ongoing support as needed. The counselor will work collaboratively with other health and wellness campus partners to ensure students receive comprehensive care with an emphasis on quick, effective support and coordination within a campus setting. This is a 9 month position.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Initial Assessment and Triage:
  • Conduct same-day intake assessments to determine the urgency and nature of students' mental health needs.
  • Prioritize and manage cases based on risk assessment and immediate needs.
  • Crisis Intervention:
  • Provide crisis counseling and support for students experiencing acute mental health issues.
  • Develop safety plans for students at risk of harm to themselves or others.
  • Brief Therapeutic Interventions:
  • Deliver short-term, evidence-based therapeutic interventions focused on immediate concerns.
  • Utilize techniques from various therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and mindfulness practices.
  • Referrals and Coordination of Care:
  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals to facilitate referrals for ongoing counseling or psychiatric services.
  • Coordinate with campus resources and external providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in accordance with ethical guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and follow-up plans in the electronic health record system.
  • Outreach and Education:
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote mental health awareness and services available to students.
  • Provide educational workshops and training sessions for students, faculty, and staff on mental health topics.
  • Professional Development:
  • Stay current with best practices and developments in the field of mental health counseling.
  • Attend regular supervision and professional development sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a counselor, psychologist, or social worker in SC
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience, preferably with young adults
  • Experience in crisis intervention and brief therapeutic modalities.
  • Strong assessment, diagnostic, and intervention skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electronic health records and documentation.
  • Knowledge of issues specific to the college student population.
  • Training in trauma-informed care and suicide prevention.

Working Conditions:

  • This position may require some evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and maintain professional composure.
