Safety Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Safety Officer is an integral part of the growth and future of Legacy Solar. This position’s primary duty is to ensure that the company is in compliance and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety guidelines to reduce work-related injuries. The person in this role is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the company’s safety program. The Safety Officer should have a growth mindset to get 1% better every day, present a positive attitude, approach employees and customers with respect and care, and clearly communicate data from job sites to their supervisor as well as to appropriate department managers.


The Safety Officer has broad responsibility for safety auditing of both job sites and each location’s physical plant. This position will also be responsible for database maintenance, troubleshooting, safety PPE/material purchasing, safety inspection, investigation and reporting issues associated with safety as a whole. 


Key Functions (other duties may be assigned) 


  • Manages the Safety Scorecard for construction and operations teams, following a metric system to score safety compliance in an in-depth way that is easy to read, understand, and present
  • Prepares and presents a bi-monthly safety meeting at all Legacy Solar locations
  • Performs weekly safety audits and inspections at job sites and physical plants, addressing any immediate needs and violations, documents, and reports findings to the immediate supervisor and HR/Safety Director
  • Manages the  safety investigation process which includes but is not limited to looking into the causes of “issues” stemming from incorrect safety procedures, documenting findings, and devising corrective action plans for “issues”
  • Prepares and presents reports on accidents and violations and determines causes, including OSHA reporting (for injuries and annual purposes)
  • Coordinates and conducts a quarterly safety audit/risk assessment that is in line with OSHA guidelines of all equipment, PPE, rules/regulations, etc.
  • Participates in weekly Safety Same Page and Construction Level 10 meetings, coming prepared with valuable dialogue and feedback
  • Coordinates with Human Resources department to continually improve the new hire onboarding process for safety
  • Implementation and continuous improvement of a safety training program for Construction & Service positions, for both new and existing employees. This includes but is not limited to: shingle roofs, metal roofs, ground mounts, flat roof mounts, residential, commercial, etc.

Holds the company accountable to best practice in safety which includes but is not limited to

  • Updates the quarterly safety plan
  • Suggests improvements for safety
  • Increases efficiency and cost savings within the safety department and actively participates in plan implementation
  • Identifies process bottlenecks in current procedures and offers timely solutions
  • Reviews existing policies and procedures; plans and implements OSHA policies and programs as required
  • Advises and leads employees on various safety-related topics, verifies that employees are acting in accordance with rules and regulations, and enforces preventative measures
  • Oversees physical plant safety and compliance. Examples include fire procedures, missing handrails, evacuation plan, etc.

  • Researches and implements safety standards, safety meetings, and the sophistication of our safety program, with help from other departments
  • Develops new safety strategies and programs within other departments including the service, administrative, and sales departments
  • Ability to work independently and effectively
  • Willing to be flexible, help in field when needed, help in warehouse when needed, help develop and train employees currently employed by legacy solar, and future employees employed by legacy solar
  • Willing to travel to any job sites for both branches and willingness to travel to future locations and branches to help with startup when needed
  • Continues Safety education including certifications, classes, and research to ensure we are top notch in our industry


Leadership Structure

  • Reports directly to the HR/Safety Director & collaborates with the HR/Safety/Construction Coordinator
  • Works closely with the Vice President of Construction, Regional Construction Managers, & Director of Operations on development of processes and implementation of policies


Growth Plan & Opportunities

  • Immediately we need you to maintain and expand your educational development for this role. A list of training required for advancement will be provided upon hire (depending on current credentials).
  • OSHA 30 certification required
  • Prefer completion of OSHA 510 and 500 (which will allow role to internally instruct OSHA 10/30 construction training)
  • Strongly prefer CPR & Forklift certifications (with the ability to obtain “train the trainer” to internally instruct)
  • As the Safety Officer masters their role and demonstrates a desire for advancement, career development opportunities within the Safety Department will be explored as the company continues to experience growth.

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week; Starting salary commensurate with experience & certifications
