Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.
The Honors College is dedicated to enriching the undergraduate academic experience for the more than 2,000 talented, motivated, and well-prepared students who choose to be members. The goal of the Honors College is to help these students build an excellent foundation that prepares them for studying at the graduate level and establishing a fulfilling career.
Position Overview
This person serves as a customer service agent and general caretaker to students in the residence hall. Tasks include the implementation of student development concepts through programs and discipline and through the advising of student organizations and activities. This person is also responsible for supervising and providing guidance and professional development opportunities to Program Advisors, Resident Assistants, and Desk Personnel. Other tasks include monitoring housekeeping and upkeep of facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and two years of residence life, student services, counseling, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Texas Driver's License or equivalent from another state in the United States.

Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm Some evenings and weekends as needed

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply advising techniques to support student needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
- Physical and emotional ability to work long and irregular hours, occasionally involving emotional stress and interrupted sleep.
- Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
- Previous university residence hall experience.
- Good driving record and comfort driving students in a 12-passenger van.
- Able to walk three flights of stairs and do rounds around and inside McConnell Hall.
- Experience working with adolescents either as a group advisor or in a school setting.
- Previous supervision of part- and full-time staff.
- Familiarity with University of North Texas and Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science is a bonus.
- Proficient with the Microsoft suite of software, (Word, Access, Excel, Power Point).

Job Duties
Supervision of Resident Assistants:
- Responsible for training at the beginning of each term, team building, setting expectations, establishing work schedules (RA On Call & Desk Shifts), conducting a mid-semester and end of semester evaluation of RAs, and updating and enforcing the RA Manual.
- Collaborating with UNT Housing and Residence Life, conducting interviews, and hiring Resident Assistants annually. Supplementing hires for staff for turnover between Fall and Spring semesters.
- Work with and develop Student Leadership positions of Senior Mentors, Judicial Board, and as an acting Advisor for assigned Student clubs.
- Conduct disciplinary hearings for mid-level policy violations and appeals from Judicial Board hearings. Clearly record disciplinary meetings and appeals and promptly submit all communication and files through disciplinary tracking systems.
- Following the chain of command. Taking concerns directly to the party involved. Voice all concerns to the appropriate person and level. Visit each departments main office a minimum of four times a semester. Support decisions of other TAMS departments and directors.
- Preparing and implementing TAMS Summer Orientation, Supervising Summer RA staff, engaging with TAMS Summer Research Students and TAMS Summer School Students.
- Operations guidance, disseminating changes in policy, time approvals, performance evaluations.
- Support the programming performed by each RA, House and the student groups. Maintain the RA Programming budget as given by UNT Housing. Attend at least 1 program sponsored by each of the 6 Houses each semester. Attend at least 2 major programs sponsored by the student groups each semester. Provide supervision as needed at programs.
- Advise assigned student organizations, develop the officers representing those organizations and programs. Attend the executive officer meetings of the organizations and assist the group in setting goals.
- Follow all TAMS emergency procedures and protocol. Respond to emergency situations promptly and appropriately, oversee security of the building (locks and alarms) and conduct fire and tornado drills. Additionally, make appropriate referrals to counseling and academic staff keeping the Student Life team informed of student issues.
- Conduct roommate matching, pairing, and assignments, disseminate roommate information, arrange for room change days (once per semester), and mediate roommate conflicts either directly or through the RA staff.
- Serve as the building representative. Track ongoing maintenance concerns and work orders. Recommend and coordinate renovation projects. Serve as liaison with custodial staff and Housing Director of MO. Supervise RA assigned to do routine maintenance tasks. Oversee RA completion of routine safety checks of rooms.
- Taking a share of Student Club Shopping trips, solely responsible for RA programming supplies purchasing, and appropriate use and reconciliation of UNT Purchasing Card.
- Be current and up to date with the student body Get to know at least 75 of the residents in each class. Attend as many student organization programs as possible. Solicit and respond to student concerns. Create or submit nominations for awards for students. Participate in community building activities with the student body.
- Notify parents about staff concerns about individual students giving a good public appearance around TAMS. No more than two complaints by parents by semester.
- Taking a share of driving schedule for student events; volunteering on occasion (once a semester) to take an overnight trip as a driver and chaperone.
