Research Specialist - Konopka Lab

Job Summary:

The Konopka laboratory focuses on the biology and metabolism of aging, with an emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. The Konopka Lab uses pharmacological and genetic strategies to evaluate fundamental mechanisms involved in aging and age-related disease. This Research Specialist will serve as the point person to lead experiments to evaluate mitochondrial energetics in ex vivo samples collected from animal and human studies. This position may also perform fundamental laboratory techniques such as western blotting and qPCR and will lead tissue processing to prepare samples for subsequent, multi-omic approaches (i.e., RNA sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, etc.). Last, this position will assist with biosafety and IACUC protocol updates and annual reviews. The selected candidate will work in a team environment that includes the PI, a postdoctoral fellow, clinical research coordinators, and/or graduate students.

Responsibilities: Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 20% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 20% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 20% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Preferred

Bachelor's Degree

Study in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Cell and Molecular Pathology, or other biological science is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • At least 6 months of proficiency with sample preparation and execution of laboratory techniques (qPCR, Western Blotting, Immunoprecipitation, histology and immunohistochemistry) required.
  • Experience with methods to assess mitochondrial respiration, hydrogen peroxide emissions, and/or other mitochondrial functions preferred.
  • Experience with management of animal husbandry, genotyping, and tissue harvest/dissection preferred.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% - 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $47,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Depending On Qualifications

The expected salary range for this position is $47,000 up to $72,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and sick leave; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits. Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
