About Our Team:

The Z Pulsed Power Systems Department (01672-1) is part of the Z Machine Infrastructure & Ops Department (01672) and is responsible for ensuring that the Laboratories’ Z Machine is ready and configured to support the nation’s High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) stockpile stewardship and other national security missions as the world’s most powerful pulsed power driver. This team works together to prepare the machine for daily operation according to the requested experiment specifications and ensure that all the pulsed power and supporting systems are maintained. Once an experiment is loaded, the team readies and fires the machine and ensures that all the requested waveforms are captured and processed for further scientific analyses. This team is highly adaptable and dynamic because of the developmental nature of many of the experiments, and the fact that Z supports Materials Science, Radiation Physics, and Fusion experiments which all have unique needs and requirements. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation.


What your Job will Be like:

We are seeking a Research and Development Laboratory Support Technologist to join a diverse team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security! Our team conducts maintenance and operations of the Z-Machine facility and carries the overall responsibility of delivering high quality pulsed power to experiments in the center of the machine. You’ll be supporting the Z Pulsed Power Facility Energy Storage Section (ESS) and the Pulse Forming Section (PFS).


On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Clean and rebuild components for pulsed power systems.
  • Troubleshoot existing components for faults.
  • Develop new processes to improve efficiency and safety.
  • Maintenance and repair of pulsed power systems within oil/water tank.
  • Maintain and operate pulsed power component testers.
  • Work within a beryllium contaminated area.
  • Use safe practices for all processes.
  • Represent the ESS/PFS team during Z shot processes.
  • Reach out across the division to support and build relationships.
  • Assisting with Laser Trigger System (LTS) in ESS tank.


Requirements:

  • High school diploma and 2-5 years’ experience maintaining and troubleshooting electrical or mechanical systems.
  • Experience with mechanical tools (wrenches, pliers, torque wrench, calipers, screwdrivers)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Must be US citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.


Location/Work Arrangement:

  • Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
