Job Description

Well is looking for a creative and ambitious reporter to produce outstanding journalism to help Times readers live healthier lives. The Well desk offers science-based guidance on a range of topics including mental and physical health, exercise, nutrition, relationships, and wellness trends. You'll write a range of stories, including news, explainers, trend stories, service stories, and enterprise that guide readers as they make decisions about their mental and physical health.

Your primary beat will be chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, but you should feel comfortable covering all aspects of health and wellness. As a beat reporter, you will be constantly developing sources, staying on top of the latest research and trends, and chasing scoops. You should have a track record of writing about health news in a clear, engaging way, and an appetite for debunking myths about health. You should be brimming with story ideas and be able to spot trends before our competitors get to them. And you should be eager to experiment with different types of storytelling and to engage with readers.

This role requires a firm grasp of deadlines, and the ability to work with a team, including close partnerships with editors on the desk. You will report into the Senior Staff Editor, Well.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities


  • Report news, service and feature stories, with a focus on cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses
  • Monitor the latest health studies and trends to conceive of fresh story ideas
  • Collaborate with other reporters, visual editors and others on the desk on assignments
  • Adhere to the Times’s editorial standards
  • Develop stories that include a wide range of voices and perspectives
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world


Basic Qualifications


  • 5 or more years as a health or science reporter
  • Experience producing first in class health and/or lifestyle journalism
  • Well-organized, highly skilled at multitasking and comfortable reporting a variety of story forms.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in a quick moving newsroom
  • Passionate about health, wellness and service journalism


This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,049.64 and $125,000.00.
