Job Summary

Serves as a clinical leader within area of specialty and / or across rehabilitation disciplines. Provides expertise and guidance to rehabilitation therapists and interdisciplinary team. Recommends and supports / leads changes in department operations and methods to improve the quality and efficiency of services.

The Clinical Specialist (Rehab Services Specialist 4) reports to the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director and has the experience and clinical ability to provide rehab care in an identified area of clinical specialization that is needed to carry out the Department’s mission and goals. The Clinical Specialist is recognized as possessing well-rounded professional skills as well as specialty knowledge and expertise in a defined area of patient care within the respective rehab discipline.

Under general supervision, and within a specific therapy discipline, the Clinical Specialist independently performs complex and specialized patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions; serves as a mentor to staff and consultant to other medical professionals in management of patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning and/or therapeutic intervention requiring specialized skills; makes recommendations in therapy practice guidelines or programs related to the specialty area and/or discipline(s); and instructs therapists and other medical professionals in the theory, application and/or performance of specialty skills. The clinical specialty areas can include Neurology, Oncology, Orthopedics, Geriatrics, Hand, Pelvic Health, Sports, Cardiopulmonary, and Clinical Education. While performing job duties, the Clinical Specialist may also supervise support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts including Rehabilitation Aides and therapy students. The Clinical Specialist actively participates in departmental and organizational programs by taking leadership roles in performance and quality improvement activities, clinical education programs, and in-services and staff development activities.

Department Description

The Department of Rehabilitative Services at UCSF Health and Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science Faculty Practice provides outpatient therapy services to adult, geriatric, adolescent and some pediatric patients in our clinics, and across interdisciplinary services at UCSF Health and Benioff Children’s Hospitals. Services include Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy.

The staff and rehab professionals of our department work individually and collaboratively to serve this purpose while retaining the humanity of our care and promoting each person's achievement of an optimal level of function within the best of our abilities and the resources that are available.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge associated with providing evaluation, diagnosis and rehabilitation therapy services within specialty area, or across disciplines.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable laws, internal policies and standards of professional conduct.
  • Proficient computer skills in word processing, electronic medical record, and online communication.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Excellent skills in working effectively on a team and collaborating with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary clinicians.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience with a minimum of 2 years in the area of defined clinical specialization.
  • Minimum of 150 hours of course work, continuing education, and/or research experience in the specialty area including lecture/lab and a demonstrated commitment to professional development through involvement in professional organizations, Grand Rounds, and independent reading.
  • Prior experience as a clinical preceptor.
  • Prior experience teaching to a variety of audiences including staff, students, multidisciplinary team, community and professionals.
  • Prior experience as a mentor.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
  • Possession of a degree or certificate in therapy discipline from an accredited educational program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctorate degree in related field.
  • A minimum of 6 months at UCSF with demonstrated ability to consistently meet clinical caseload requirements of a Senior therapist and formal recommendation by at least one Rehab Services Supervisor 2.
  • Proven eligibility for and submission of application for a non-paid (WOS) clinical faculty appointment in the SOM Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.
  • Possession of an advanced academic degree in a related area, of formal professional board certification in a clinical specialty area, and/or demonstrated experience-based expertise through clinical/research activity in a practice area not yet identified through national association certification.
  • Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Strong Mentoring and Communication skills.
  • Formal, professional board certification in a clinical specialty area
  • Formal, professional certification as a clinical instructor

License/Certification

  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure as an Occupational Therapist or a Speech Language Pathologist by the State of California.
  • AHA BLS Certification
