Summary

The Critical Care Float Pool is made up of skilled and experienced nurses who have the unique ability to float between several different critical care areas across the health system. The Float Pool Registered Nurse is a licensed professional able to demonstrate the following core competencies: assessment, technical skills, communication, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, planning, intervention, evaluation, flexibility, organizational skills, professional accountability, leadership and service. These nurses deliver patient family centered care in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence based practice standards of quality, safety and service. This is a unique opportunity to utilize a variety of clinical skills, critical thinking and flexibility.

E Ducation/Experience

  • G raduate of an accredited school of Nursing, BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of recent acute ICU/ED experience required

C Ertifications/License

  • C urrent Illinois RN license
  • TNCC, ACLS, and PALS certifications required

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes the assessment data to determine the patient's nursing diagnoses or patient problems.
  • Coordinates care delivery through the utilization of department, organization and community models and resources; critical thinking; interdisciplinary teamwork; patient advocacy; and the unique nurse-patient connection, and identifies and uses available resources to define and implement the plan of care.
  • Detects and collects comprehensive data and identifies patterns pertinent to the patient's health and unique situation.
  • Develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes, based on the patient's individualized situation and anticipated needs.
  • Effects changes through engagement, involvement, and participation of peers and colleagues, leading others where they need to be rather than where they want to go (American Nurses Credentialing Center [ANCC]).
  • Employs strategies, including the art of translation, to promote healthy behaviors for patients and families.
  • Enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice through communication, documentation, initiation of change, creativity, innovation, participation in quality improvement (QI), evidence based practice (EBP), and research processes.
  • Evaluates one's own nursing practice in relation to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and professional practice standards and guidelines.
  • Evaluates progress toward effective attainment of patient, family and community goals.
  • Implements the identified plan based on the nursing process, our nursing mission and philosophy, and our organization's mission.
  • Mentors others in all aspects of nursing practice.

Blood and Body Fluids: Diagnostic composite of patients, frequent contact with intravenous devices, and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, stool, vomitus) and administration of blood does create a high risk. use of needleless IV system, universal precautions and protective equipment minimize risk.

TB or Airborne Pathogens: Patient diagnostic presentations do pose high risk; however usage of protective wear, appropriate size TB mask from fit test and universal precautions reduces risk.

Sensory Requirements (speech, Vision, Smell, Hearing, Touch)

Speech: Required to communicate with patient/families/staff/MD's. Ability to ask for help.

Vision: Required to observe patients and their physical assessment, ability to read reports, ability to read machines.

Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.

Hearing: Necessary to hear alarms, calls for help and to hear patient verbalizations; ability to listen for lung, bowel, heart sounds.

Touch: Necessary to assess patients, need to distinguish between hot and cold.

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25-150'- waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35#. Carry fire extinguishers down 3-4 flight of stairs or up 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.

Leg strength - up to 50#: Occasionally Repetitive use of foot or feet in operating machine control: utilized in positioning beds during transport; x-ray, surgery or in an emergency situation from floor to floor, locking beds or cardiac chairs.
