The Public Relations Specialist (Copywriter/Editor) supports agency efforts to identify and implement effective public relations strategies for nonprofit, philanthropic, and government clients. You will work across the team to support the production of excellent end products in a fast-moving, rapidly changing environment. You will work closely with project managers across several teams to assist with public/media relations and copywriting/editing to secure high-quality client exposure through earned media and increase agency presence.
Essential Job Duties
Learning (15%)
Participate in professional development and learning activities to continuously improve leadership, management, project management, and writing skills
Read and reflect on agency readings; connect readings to short- and long-term goals for team and agency
Participate in agency team meetings, professional development check-ins, and other internal meetings, as needed
Maintaining high-level of organization for print and digital files and materials
Copywriting/Copyediting (40%)
Draft and edit copy included in headlines and body copy for all public relations products including press releases, media advisories, press statements, opinion editorials, blogs, letters to the editor, video scripts, email marketing, speeches, talking points, etc.
Understand the goals, audience, and message for client campaigns and assist with the drafting of compelling, clear, and concise copy to suit
Support the development of copy and art for earned, social, and paid media campaigns
Work closely with the digital team to identify interesting stories, news, and other content to share on client social media channels
Public Relations and Communications (35%)
Work closely with clients to obtain information necessary to complete writing assignments
Collaborate with Senior Public Relations Specialist and other team members to develop story angles, social media content, editorial calendars, and public relations campaigns that meet the client’s goals, objectives, and budget parameters
Conduct regular research on clients, client fields and industries, and related matters to understand opportunities to share information across multiple platforms, and pitch stories
Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of sustainable strategic communications strategies, public relations plans, and marketing campaigns for clients and the agency
Support monitoring, compiling, and distribution of clips for clients regularly to stay abreast of current topics that impact clients; update keyword searches to ensure the most timely and relevant news information is being gathered
Support the Senior Public Relations Specialist with corresponding with press/media to schedule interviews, pitch stories, and obtain added value public relations/earned media opportunities for clients
Project Management (15%)
Assist with keeping projects on time and within budget
Maintain a high level of organization for print and digital files and materials
Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of press conferences, events, and annual conferences
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, business administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Technical knowledge and understanding of public relations strategies, metrics, and tracking
Experience using media monitoring tools, such as MuckRack, Cision, or Mention, for research and pitching
Project management and organization skills
Ability to learn and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
Ability to handle the pressure of meeting tight deadlines
Intrinsically motivated self-starter, team player, critical thinker, and effective communicator
