Position Summary

Position is responsible for disseminating information on departmental services to the media and general public, as well as coordinating community needs with departmental programs and activities.

Position Responsibilities

Oversees media relations and public information for agency,

Prepares press releases, arranges news conferences, and coordinates interaction between the media and

the department.

Works with Mayor's Office and other city/county departments on joint projects and issues,

Serves as agency's public and media spokesperson.

Supervises all departments marketing and advertising efforts and contracts.

Advises director and staff on current media events and issues.

Writes, edits, and produces brochures, catalogs, newsletters, and specialized publications, as needed.

Oversees event planning and speechwriting for director.

Maintains media database and/or fax list.

Oversees department website.

Meets with citizens, business groups, and civic clubs in efforts to promote the City of Indianapolis.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Government or related field and three (3) years of related work experience. One (1) year of related work experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Effective communications, research/analytical, and computer skills are required. Excellent writing skills and verbal communications skills absolutely required. Knowledge of desktop publishing software preferred. Ability to coordinate several projects and work with deadlines.

Independent Judgment

Established policies and procedures control actions. Independent judgment is utilized when there are no available policies and procedures and errors in judgment may cause inconsistencies and inconveniences as well as regulatory and budgetary problems.
