The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking a creative and experienced Public Events Maintenance Technician/ Stagehand to join our events team. This is a new full-time position at the Indianapolis Zoo and will serve as a core member of the Guest Experience Events team for signature Zoo events including ZooBoo, Christmas at the Zoo, XZOOberance, Animals and All that Jazz.

Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate will possess two (2) or more years of electrical and rough carpentry experience preferably in the general maintenance and/ or theater production field. A High School diploma or equivalent is required, trade or technical school certification is highly desirable. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position in which shifts may vary due to public event schedules and peak season demands. This may require working weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Responsibilities And Duties Include (but Are Not Limited To)

  • Serves as a core member of the Zoo's event team actively contributing ideas and technical expertise and skills to grow the attendance and revenue of the Zoo's public events.
  • In conjunction with the Public Events Manager and Facilities Department, establishes the parameters for public event projects implementation.
  • Builds props and miscellaneous decorations as needed for public events.
  • Partners with the Facilities team to layout the power needs for lighting elements and extension cords to balance power across the Zoo's available outlets.
  • Participates in planning and design and provides expertise regarding constructability review, logistics planning, and storage needs related to public events.
  • Serves as field liaison between the contractors and Zoo staff including coordinating all onsite activities from delivery to strike of events.
  • Maintains and repairs general equipment and decorations including but not limited to signage, banners, temporary structures, light frames, string lights, extension cords, etc., at the Zoo. Maintains all props, decorations, and fixtures to the highest quality with guidance from the Manager of Facilities.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to transport objects.
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
  • Must be able to safely operate department tools and manual transmission vehicles.
  • Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harness.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within thirty [30] days of hire date), and be insurable by IZS, Inc.'s insurance company.
