General Functions

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer who serves as the college's leader and advocate for academic innovation and excellence. This position serves on the President's cabinet and works collaboratively to support the college's mission, vision, and strategic plan. They supervise all instructional programs, including the College's campus centers, online learning, accelerated college enrollment, registration and records, workforce training and non-credit learning, academic support (tutoring), academic assessment, and all developmental programming. The provost advises the President on all instructional matters relating to curriculum, instruction, academic standards, assessment, professional development, and other assigned areas.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Directs the overall function of the Academic Affairs division in accordance with the State University of New York (SUNY), the NYS Department of Education, Board of Trustees policies, College procedures, shared governance structure, and as required by law.
  • Manages the development, implementation, and assessment of the Academic Master Plan in support of the College's Strategic Plan.
  • Guides academic leaders and faculty in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs that ensure high-quality degree and certificate programs aligned with transfer requirements or relevant to the labor market and economy, are delivered in modalities designed for optimized access, and meet evolving transfer and workforce demands.
  • Responsible for short- and long-range planning to provide new and/or revised programs, courses, non-credit training opportunities, academic support services, and articulation agreements to meet the future needs of the College and the community.
  • Oversees the appointment, reappointment, promotion, renewal, termination, leave of absence, evaluation, and other employment status matters of faculty and staff within the division.
  • Engages with faculty leaders to support and elevate their role in teaching, creativity, and service.
  • Encourages and supports professional development that promotes teaching and learning excellence of faculty and staff.
  • Recommends procedures related to academic standards and practices in cooperation with instructional supervisors and appropriate faculty committees including Academic Senate.
  • Develops and administers the annual operating budget for the division while advocating and allocating resources to enhance and ensure academic quality.
  • Serves as a member of various college committees including the Genesee Community College Association Board, Institutional Effectiveness, IT Governance, Academic Senate Executive Committee (ex-officio), and Space Planning Committee.
  • Collaborates across all areas of the College to 1) develop and streamline guided learning pathways for new, continuing, and returning students; 2) advance the college's commitment to access; 3) attract and retain students; and 4) integrate technologies that enhance and improve the learning environment.
  • Develops and sustains productive and collaborative relationships across divisions and with other college constituencies such as Academic Senate, the Genesee Educational Association leadership, and Civil Service employees.
  • Attends Board of Trustee meetings and various academically oriented SUNY meetings, and provides reports as requested.
  • Performs such duties as may be assigned by the President of the College, including representing the president's office in their absence.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION

Master's Degree required, with strong preference for an earned doctorate in a discipline taught in the community college or in higher education/community college administration.

Experience

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible academic and administrative work experience that includes demonstrated leadership in furthering academic growth that fosters student success. A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience, preferably in a community college is required. Curriculum development strongly preferred.

Knowledge Skills And Abilities

A strong history of proven leadership in promoting innovation in curriculum and instruction. A demonstrated ability to balance strong, action-oriented leadership with collegial decision-making and governance practices. An outstanding proficiency in communication skills. The ability to influence change within a complex academic environment. A strong commitment to fostering diversity in the College's faculty, staff, and student body. Is mindful of and develops accessibility solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically. A well-organized, broad knowledge of community college structure and purpose. The understanding of and the ability to support a sound faculty evaluation system and academic assessment. Experience with academic and administrative computer technology and its applications to academic programs.

This position reports to the President.

Reporting to this position: Dean of Math, Science, and Career Education; Dean of Distributed Learning; Dean of Human Communications and Behavior; Registrar; Associate Dean of Library Services; Executive Director of the BEST Center (Workforce);Executive Secretary; Other persons as may be assigned.

Compensation, Benefits and Conditions of Employment: This is a twelve-month, full-time position. Salary, benefits and conditions of employment are as set by Procedure 230. We offer generous paid time off including sick, vacation, and personal time. Additionally, we offer comprehensive health and dental coverage, life insurance, and an FSA plan.
