JOB TITLE: Protestant Service Music Director, Main Post Chapel

POSITION INFORMATION: Protestant musicians to support chapel religious services and programs within the Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) community, which includes Fort Sam Houston (FSH), JBSA Randolph (RND) and JBSA Lackland (LAK). This includes the planning, coordination, and surveillance of the activities necessary to ensure individuals meet and maintain all required qualifications for their respective positions.

Responsibilities

The Protestant Service Musician will lead the choir, sing music and play a lead instrument (i.e., piano or guitar) for congregational singing for the schedule of services and any special services as needed. They provide the music activities for the Protestant Gospel, Contemporary, Liturgical or Traditional Service. Performance shall be limited to service specific requirements such as the Protestant Service, rehearsals, and special services.

The length of rehearsals is determined by the Musicians in coordination with the Service Chaplain. Any time spent immediately prior to the worship service or event is considered part of the worship service.

Although there is a Schedule of Service, all times, dates and locations are subject to change. The Protestant Chaplain or his designee will approve the music selection. Duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Schedule and conduct weekly rehearsals.
  • Arrive at least sixty (60) minutes prior to the beginning of worship services and special services to consult with the Chaplain to assure that equipment is setup and prepared in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate musical selections (through the COR) for approval by the Service Chaplain.
  • Lead the praise team and congregation in worship and vocally lead them as required by the Service Chaplain.
  • Sing/play assigned music from a religious music, ecclesiastical, or suitable type publication resource consistent with the nature of the Protestant Service. Provide arranged, improved, and scored music as appropriate for compatibility with the type of worship service or other functions of the Chaplain’s program at which it was rendered.
  • Submit a musical plan (through the COR) in support of chapel services, programs and events, as required for approval by the Service Chaplain. Provide a PowerPoint presentation with song lyrics or the song for the audio video (AV) person in the Chapel in which service is being provided and the musician is performing, as required.
  • Recruit and recommend high quality music volunteers from the JBSA community to assist in the conduct and operation of the Chapel Music program.
  • Return all government owned music scores and equipment obtained in the performance of the required duties following the last service provided under the contract. Musicians shall not engage in the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials by photocopying or any other means that would expose the government to liability for penalties under existing or future copyright laws.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience with musical instrument. Be able to skillfully play, sight read, arrange, improvise, play, and score music.
  • Have two (2) or more years of college in music (or related field), or equivalent years of related experience in a chapel/church setting.
  • A degree in music and/or certification by appropriate professional organizations is desired.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in reading and interpretation of vocal and instrumental scores to include both liturgical and contemporary music.
  • Ability to sight-read and play standard hymns, anthems and special solo music, and to play an accompanying music instrument with the choir and congregational singing suitable for this worship.
  • High School diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Certificate, or compulsory education equivalency.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to efficiently plan and organize, communicate, and manage diverse program requirements.
  • Read/comprehend, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Ability and willingness to provide services in an ecumenical and pluralistic environment.
  • Communicate effectively and cooperate with their designated Service Chaplain, Chaplain Corp staff and parishioners.
