What are Trust Fund Positions? Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. The Office of Advancement oversees and guides the fundraising efforts of the entire Smithsonian and is home to the central development organization for the Institution. In addition to raising significant support for a variety of Smithsonian initiatives, the Office of Advancement provides support services to advancement offices across the Institution. The office engages with staff throughout the Smithsonian in accomplishing their goals. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Office of Advancement seeks an experienced and detail-focused Prospect Research Analyst. Working with colleagues in the Office Advancement and across the Smithsonian, the Prospect Research Analyst contributes to the meaningful engagement of donors and prospects by providing research and strategy recommendations relevant to the Institution’s fundraising priorities. This role is specifically responsible for collecting and presenting research data to support the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

The analyst proactively provides and responds to requests for information on major gift prospects from Smithsonian units and gift officers; identifies and interprets financial data; provides philanthropic capacity estimates on prospective donors; participates in donor strategy sessions, updates development database with research and prospect tracking data; and serves as a liaison to several Smithsonian units. Strict adherence to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both the Smithsonian Institution and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) are always required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Qualified candidates will successfully demonstrate strong communications skills, an ability to successfully manage multiple deadlines, superior organization skills, and a demonstrated ability to work independently. The incumbent will be self-motivated and detail-oriented, accurate and professional always; must be precise, diplomatic, dedicated, and mature as well as flexible and able to work well under pressure. Proficient computer and internet skills should be demonstrated in applications. A minimum of three-years of experience in fundraising prospect research and a bachelor’s degree are required. Experience in a large, complex non-profit organization desired.
