Position Description
The RAND Office of Communications and External Affairs (CEA) has an exciting opportunity in its Research Editorial and Production group for a publications project management professional to support RAND’s mission to help improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis while cultivating expertise in managing production for nonprofit and scholarly research publications.
Duties
As part of the Print Production group, the Production Editor will play a critical role in managing the production of RAND publications, ensuring that they are produced on time, within budget, in accordance with RAND’s quality standards, and in a manner that maximizes outreach and impact potential with various audiences. Primary duties include the following:
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is required. Relevant experience includes managing print and digital publications projects. Experience in a publishing or communications environment is desirable.
Security Clearance
The ability to obtain and maintain DHS Fitness and a U.S. security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
Location
This position will be located at one of the following RAND offices: Arlington, Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; or Santa Monica, Calif. This position is eligible for RAND’s hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. Some onsite presence will be required to meet business needs, including on an ad-hoc basis; onsite needs will vary from month to month.
Salary Range: $62,700 – 91,500
RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including, but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity. The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatic pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken). In addition, RAND provides strong benefits, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, paid time off, and more.

Duties
As part of the Print Production group, the Production Editor will play a critical role in managing the production of RAND publications, ensuring that they are produced on time, within budget, in accordance with RAND’s quality standards, and in a manner that maximizes outreach and impact potential with various audiences. Primary duties include the following:
- Manage the production of standard and occasionally complex publications by overseeing budgets, schedules, resources, and task assignments over the complete production and dissemination arc. Provide cost estimates, production timelines, and status updates to stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain accurate, complete, and current records in various systems that support search, reporting, and data-driven decisionmaking and analysis.
- Collaborate with division leadership, researchers, and other staff in the planning for division publication portfolios or high-profile projects and execute collateral duties.
- Contribute to CEA initiatives, such as software adoption and business-process refinement, and contribute to documentation and training related to best practices in using production-management systems and tools.
Qualifications
Required
- Proven track record of managing multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Strong interest and skill in managing publications and relationships
- Prior experience managing publication projects, including experience overseeing production of both print and online products
- Thorough knowledge of the publication production arc
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Demonstrated problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Attention to detail and a proven track record of actively overseeing and tracking complex, detail-driven business processes
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel)
- Experience working in an academic, public policy, or nonprofit publishing
- Prior experience in editing, typesetting, proofreading, or proof checking
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign)
- Working knowledge of Adobe Workfront and Adobe Experience Manager or similar production-management systems
- Experience working with print, 508-compliance, and other vendors
