Producer, Video Programming

The USA TODAY NETWORK is looking for someone who is always following the news cycle across politics, world events, money, celebrity, and everything in between, to join its video programming team as a Producer, Video Programming for our local properties.

This role will be heavily involved in programming and distributing video for USA TODAY Network’s local properties in order to grow local and national audiences and grow revenue. They will ensure live and on demand video content is programmed in articles, in video playlists and on social platforms for USA TODAY Network local properties.

This person will work closely between the USA TODAY Network national video and programming teams and a number of local news editorial teams. Prior experience working in a local newspaper or broadcast newsroom is preferred.

The Producer, Video Programming will team up with members of a number of local network properties to program and promote original and third-party video content in articles, section fronts, social media and on other platforms.

The Producer, Video Programming will be expected to monitor digital analytics for interesting trends, to make programming decisions using Google Analytics, Parse.ly and other analytics tools.

The candidate needs to have a keen eye for quality control and the ability to monitor multiple video platforms including desktop, mobile web, apps and social media. They should have experience with Content Management Systems and the ability to identify technical issues related to video distribution.

The Producer will be able to produce and edit video, so should be comfortable with basic producing and editing video for desktop, mobile and social platforms. Familiarity with Adobe Premiere is preferred. Prioritization and multi-tasking are second nature to this role.

The Producer, Video Programming, will be responsible for reviewing third party content for editorial quality to be sure it meets the standards of the USA TODAY Network. You will also be responsible for writing strong, clickable headlines and descriptions to optimize performance and SEO on desktop, mobile and social platforms. Knowledge and history of AP Style writing is preferred.

The Producer, Video Programming should be comfortable making editorial decisions and with rights management. The Producer must be detail oriented as he/she will be the last line of defense in making sure content is up to date, accurate, editorially sound and does not contain errors in grammar, spelling or style.

The candidate should have schedule flexibility with the ability to work breaking news. While this role’s primary responsibility is to support USA TODAY Network local properties, they may also be asked to help with other video team roles such as programming for USA TODAY, managing live streams and light video editing.

This role will primarily work with newsrooms in the Eastern and Central time zones and will be expected to work those hours.

This position is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-4 years professional experience.
  • Experience working in a local or national newsroom (internships ok).
  • Digital analytics experience such as Parse.ly and Google Analytics.
  • Producing video for digital platforms.
  • Headline-writing skills.
  • SEO knowledge.
  • Excellent communications skills, online and in person, with the community and fellow journalists.
  • Ability to proactively manage priorities.
  • Adobe Premiere and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of AP Style.

The hourly rate for this role will range between $14.28 and $33.73.  Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
