Acts as staff specialist in providing technical guidance for complex or unique design assignments that satisfy the requirements of building designs in accordance with applicable governing codes. The incumbent must be capable of applying diversified knowledge of design/ engineering principles and practices, and independently making decisions on significant design engineering problems or methods.

Requirements

  • Requires a BS or MS in an Engineering discipline and typically 5+ years related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).
  • Professional Registration is required.
  • Must be cognizant of the capabilities and limitations of various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse engineering assignments.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to walk job sites which would include the ability to climb stairs and navigate construction sites.
  • Up to 10% by both air and ground travel.
  • The majority of work is performed indoors with occasional site visits to projects.

  • Performs detailed calculations, develops specifications, and directs the preparations of working drawings, instructions, and other related documents of a complex project of large size or multiple projects.
  • Analyzes complex design problems requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
  • Consults with construction personnel concerning complex design constructability issues.
  • Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget.
  • May plan, organize, and supervise design engineering activities for a project of significant size and complexity or two or more projects of moderate size and complexity.
  • Mentors less experienced engineers and designers

Discipline Specific Skills

  • Proven proficiency using Revit (or Plant 3d) within design projects
  • Develop Design Criteria (code, functionality) for mid-size to large projects
  • Develop conceptual layouts for various equipment systems accounting for material flows, maintenance and operational access
  • Develop equipment data sheets and design specifications for process and production equipment suitable for procurement (including pumps, tanks, filters, bulk material handling equipment, conveyors, ovens/furnaces, cooling, hydraulic systems and similar)
  • Performs technical bid tabulations for equipment and makes unit selections
  • Performs review of vendor submittals and drawing approval sets including leading collaboration with other in-house disciplines
  • Performs model reviews and digital walkthroughs with internal and client teams
  • Performs equipment sizing calculations and pipe stress analyses
  • Develops and maintains project equipment and specialty items lists
  • Works with PFDs and P&IDs, including providing equipment information
  • Leads process mechanical design effort on mid-size to large projects
  • Collaborate with other discipline leads
  • Working proficiency of the following Codes and Standards:
    • ASME: Boiler and Pressure Vessel (S8D1), Power (B31.1) & Process Piping (B31.3)
    • API 610, 650/620
    • International Building Code (IBC)
    • Industrial Ventilation and ASHRAE
  • Working familiarity of the following Software packages:
    • Design and Review: Revit, ACC/BIM360, Plant 3D, Navisworks, Revizto, CAESAR II
    • Project and Productivity: Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Procore, Bluebeam
