Position Title: Principal Scientist for Medical Device

Location: Sunny South California, Carlsbad, CA


Job Overview:


We are seeking an experienced Principal Scientist with a foreign veterinary degree to join our innovative medical device division. This role is integral to our focus on ISR (in vivo structural reaction) studies, particularly involving catheters and implants. Situated in our state-of-the-art, newly established facility with five surgical suites, you will have the opportunity to influence the future direction of our medical device division. This role partners with a seasoned study manager, providing a collaborative environment to excel and innovate.

Primary Responsibilities:


- Develop and support in vivo models for screening medical devices, focusing on subcutaneous implants, wound work, and simple implant procedures.

- Collaborate with client surgeons, often human surgeons, to ensure the success of surgical procedures, emphasizing the importance of veterinary surgical expertise.

- Support clinical care of animals in surgical studies, including post-operative monitoring and evaluations.

- Provide surgical support and expertise in anesthesia, surgical procedures, and analgesics to facilitate protocol development.

- Offer clinical and technical support to internal and external stakeholders regarding surgical models and related services.

- Act as Research Lead or Study Director for preclinical studies in various species.

- Assist in the preparation and review of study protocols and reports.

- Contribute to Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities, such as protocol review, program assessment, and facility inspections.

- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and standards for animal care and use (e.g., USDA, FDA, and AAALAC).

- Train staff on in-vivo procedures and recommend improvements for veterinary and animal care standards.

- Administer controlled substances and maintain accurate records.

- Develop new surgical techniques or procedural enhancements suitable for research studies.

- Undertake special projects and provide support for administrative tasks as necessary.


Candidate Attributes:


- Strong background in lab animal (in vivo) research with a specific focus on surgical techniques.

- Ability to perform study responsibilities across multiple species with minimal supervision.

- Flexibility to accommodate various schedules, hours, and provide comprehensive coverage as needed, including after-hours and on-call support.

- Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with internal teams and external clients, coupled with meticulous attention to detail.

- Preferred experience working within a Contract Research Organization or Research Service Provider

- Demonstrated strong work ethic, self-motivation, and adaptability in a dynamic team environment.


Education:


- Degree in veterinary medicine (Foreign Veterinary Degree BVM, BVMS, BVSc, DVM, DMV, MVD, etc).

- Consideration given to graduate-level degrees (e.g., M.S./Ph.D.) in pharmaceutical sciences, life sciences, or pharmacology.


Experience:


- Minimum of 5-7 years of pertinent industry experience, dependent on educational background.

- Preference for experience with both small and large animals.

- Familiarity with imaging modalities (e.g., TEE, C-arm) will be advantageous.

- Comprehensive understanding of GLP study execution and documentation requirements.
