Press Secretary

Position Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000 - $78,000 per year, dependent on experience and education

Job Overview

MassCEC is seeking an experienced media relations professional to join our growing, high-volume Communications team as Press Secretary. The Press Secretary will be a core member of MassCEC’s Communications team ensuring that MassCEC’s objectives and achievements are communicated effectively to the media and the public through incisive messaging.

Reporting to and partnering with the Senior Manager of Communications, the Press Secretary will coordinate with colleagues to implement MassCEC’s communications strategy through effective media relations. This person will carry out initiatives in a timely, effective, and well-ordered fashion.

The Press Secretary must have the ability to prioritize, multitask, and shift gears quickly while working on tight deadlines. Large volumes of correspondence and communications must be reviewed and shared with quick turnarounds. It is essential that all press/publication deadlines be met, and that the public be kept up to date on MassCEC’s mission and initiatives.

Job Duties

  • Manage frequent inbound media inquiries about MassCEC’s programs, properties, and relevant matters;
  • Research topics for talking points as part of media response;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, reporters, and select social media influencers;
  • Craft media statements from MassCEC employees and the CEO;
  • Assist in drafting and distributing press releases and other media materials;
  • Coordinate and staff interviews between MassCEC employees and reporters;
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with other state agencies;
  • Track, compile, and measure media placements;
  • Create and maintain the agency’s press distribution list;
  • Compile daily and weekly press clips and circulate to staff;
  • Collaborate with social media team to amplify media coverage;
  • Help colleagues on the Marketing and Communications team including Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Senior Manager of Communications, Director of Marketing, and others, as needed, on a variety of communications and media projects and public events; and
  • Some travel and staffing evening and weekend events may be required.

Education

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing or a related field.

Experience

  • 2-4 years’ experience in media relations and communications functions, preferably in clean energy, economic development, emerging technology, or journalism.
  • Experience working in government preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • A highly motivated team player with a demonstrated ability to take complicated material and present it to general audiences.
  • Professional manner and ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with various programs within MassCEC and with partner organizations.
  • Ability to support staff with external-facing roles so they can relay the communications strategy and act as effective spokespeople for agreed-upon messages.
  • Ability to champion effective agency branding of MassCEC to ensure a coordinated approach across the organization and in printed publications, the website, and social media.
  • Proven ability to work independently under minimal supervision and troubleshoot and develop solutions and make recommendations.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to consistently produce polished written work product without errors
  • Solid internet-based research skills (especially for gathering news clippings), and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
