Job Description
Under limited supervision, the Construction Design Consultant (DC) serves as the primary liaison between developers/customers and the company, managing requests for large complex capital designs. The role involves contract development, design alternative formulation, cost estimation, and expectation management to ensure the successful delivery of distribution design products.
Responsibilities
- Acts as a single point of contact for developer/customer and manages the relationship with the developer/customer to ensure the successful execution of design and construction projects.
- Sets appropriate expectations for the developer/customer regarding SRP level of service, job process, responsibilities, deliverables, schedule, costs and safety.
- Resolve job-related hazards and encroachment situations.
- Ensures the scope of each job is appropriately designated in order to proceed with the design work.
- Consult with developer/customer regarding the placement of trench routes and facilities, design and construction standards, survey, and easement requirements, and assist developer/customer to resolve facility conflicts prior to design.
- Ensures that system requirements are incorporated into the designs.
- Provide accurate red-line drawings for Design Techs to produce construction ready prints.
- Facilitates the process to secure design acceptance signatures from developer/customer.
- Determines the design and construction fees to be assessed in compliance with corporate costing policies and procedures.
- Creates the appropriate design and construction contracts for each job.
- Estimates the design labor effort requirements for Design Techs for each job.
- Assigns job design due dates and set job priorities for the scheduler.
- Conducts pre and post design meetings with Design Techs for each job.
- Attends pre-construction meetings to oversee the communication to the developer/customer.
- Substitutes for and performs the duties of project leader during his/her absence.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Be fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.
- Entry level: Minimum 2 years of experience.
- Senior Level: Minimum 5 years of experience.
- Promotion to Senior Level requires 3 years at Level 1 or equivalent experience.
- Extensive contact with professionals outside of company; including consulting engineers, municipal representatives, and developer agents.
- Maintaining confidentiality.
- Responsibility for directing the prioritization of scheduling and making commitments for delivery of design and construction products.
- Ability to represent company on external committees with other utilities, agencies, municipalities, manufactures and development/customers.
- AutoCAD (AUD “Automated Utility Design” for utilities) highly desired.
- SmallWorld is highly desired.
- Maximo WAM “work asset management” exp is helpful.
- Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license
- Project Scope: Primarily focuses on new construction projects in the residential and commercial sectors. Residential projects encompass multi-family dwellings, apartment complexes, and subdivisions. Commercial projects include distribution facilities, hospitals, malls, and various retail and dining establishments.
- Experience Level: Emphasizes the preference for candidates with substantial experience in power utilities design. Prior experience is preferred to minimize the need for extensive training.
- Design Responsibilities: Involves designing electrical distribution systems beyond the substation level. This includes planning for transformers, meter panels, switches, and other necessary components to connect properties to the power grid. For example, designing power distribution for large-scale developments like housing communities or commercial establishments.
- Client Interaction: Highlights the importance of effectively managing client expectations and providing regular updates on project progress. The DC serves as the main point of contact for clients and developers, ensuring clear communication and satisfaction with the design solutions provided.
- Redlining and Drafting Coordination: In residential projects, the Design Consultant collaborates with customers to create redline drawings outlining specific design requirements and preferences. These redline drawings are then passed along to the drafting team for formalization. It's important to note that while the Design Consultant oversees this process, they are not responsible for the drafting itself.
- Field Work and Customer Interaction: The role involves frequent fieldwork, requiring the Design Consultant to meet with customers onsite to assess project requirements, discuss design options, and address any concerns. As such, candidates must be comfortable with direct customer interaction and possess strong communication skills to effectively convey technical information to clients.
- Company Vehicle Operation: The Design Consultant will be provided with company vehicles for transportation to and from project sites and client meetings. Candidates should have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, as they will be responsible for operating company vehicles safely and professionally.
