Job Description
The Pharma Solutions business will be taking on its next chapter of growth as a trusted partner for the pharmaceutical industry with the announcement to sell Pharma Solutions to Roquette. This move will position Pharma Solutions to expand its industry leadership through continued investment in innovation to meet the evolving needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and developers worldwide.
The sale is presently expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The Pharma Solutions business unit will remain a part of IFF until close and, at such time, it will transition to Roquette. We have an exciting opportunity for an Analytical Scientist in the Polymer Characterization R&D team in Wilmington, Delaware. The Polymer Characterization team is part of the Pharma Solutions business unit of International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). The Analytical Scientist role supports the research and development of polysaccharides and cellulosic materials for applications in the pharmaceutical and related industries.
The Analytical Scientist will excel in experimental execution of a variety of analytical techniques related to polymer powder, solution, and interfacial behavior in support of the Pharma Solutions R&D pipeline and customer application testing. Specific technical focus is on powder and solution rheology, thermal analyses, and interfacial dynamics. A successful applicant will have laboratory experience associated with the experimental methods, analytical techniques, and instrumentation troubleshooting. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate good interpersonal and organizational skills with a strong commitment to safety.
We are looking for a passionate scientist who will assist in furthering our understanding of the fundamental and in-application behavior of commercial and experimental polymers used in pharmaceutical formulations and drug manufacturing. This will include rheology, calorimetry, texture analysis, viscometry, tensiometry, and related techniques. The analytical scientist should be able to work independently, preparing and running samples and performing data analysis and reporting. The successful candidate should be able to make suggestions for method improvements and perform method development. In this role close cooperation with other R&D, applications, quality, and manufacturing groups within the business is essential.

Responsibilities
- Sample preparation and analysis
- Assist senior scientists with lab work and data analysis
- Troubleshoot and assist in repairing analytical instruments
- Participate in writing analytical reports
- Communicate results to stakeholders
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related field with at least 5 years laboratory experience or a master’s degree in with 2 years laboratory experience in a related discipline.
- Laboratory experience with polymer powder or solution analysis.
- General knowledge of physical chemistry of synthetic and natural polymers, especially polymer solutions.
In addition to the above qualifications, prior experience with some of the following is desired:
- Work in a biotech lab with applications such as assay analysis, sterile culture, or bioprocesses.
- Experience with pharmaceutical formulations and processes, such as tableting, blending, coating, granulation, and milling.
- Exposure to cGMP manufacturing and/or GLP laboratory processes, especially as relates to quality labs.
