DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Regulatory Legal Advice and Counsel: Provide legal and policy advice to senior management, business units, and other departments on a wide range of policy matters including, but not limited to: tax, transportation, trade, environment, and energy. Analyze policy issues and risks associated with business strategies, transactions, and operations in the regulatory or legislative context.
  2. Advocacy: Represent the Company before government agencies, Congress, and trade associations.
  3. Regulatory Compliance: Support legal department with business and control functions including legal, compliance, supervision, risk, and audit to manage the Company’s responses to regulatory and government inquiries and consider actions to enhance policies, procedures, and controls. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  4. Policy Tracking: Responsible for monitoring and updating business units with key policy developments or enforcement trends that impact the company’s operations and industry.
  5. Risk Management: Identify policy risks facing the organization and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  6. Advocacy Campaigns: Develop and execute advocacy campaigns to mobilize support for the organization's policy positions and objectives.
  7. Strategic Partnerships: Work with third-party organizations, think tanks, and advocacy groups to advance the organization's policy objectives. Foster relationships with external stakeholders to amplify the organization's advocacy efforts and leverage collective influence.
  8. Policy Reporting: Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior leadership and the board of directors on activities and outcomes.


MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Policy Experience: Significant prior experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, trade association, government agency, or Capitol Hill overseeing policy matters. An understanding of the policymaking process in Washington, D.C. including knowledge of U.S. Congress.
  2. Regulatory Experience: Familiarity with regulatory agencies and processes, such as the Department of Treasury, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and other industry-specific regulatory bodies.
  3. Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations relevant to the organization's industry and operations.
  4. Industry Knowledge: Experience working in the automotive, lithium ion battery, clean energy or adjacent industry in Washington DC. Familiarity with the organization's industry, including its regulatory issues, key stakeholders, and policy priorities.


REQUIRED EDUCATION

Degree Level: Masters

Field: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school (desired).

  1. Policy Knowledge and Expertise: Experience with the legislative and oversight capacities of U.S. Congress. Knowledgeable of the legislative process and experience meeting with Congressional offices.
  2. Legal Knowledge and Expertise: Understanding of relevant areas of policy, legislative process, and law. Ability to interpret and apply laws and proposed legislation to provide sound advice and support.
  3. Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities to assess complex legal and policy issues, identify risks, and develop strategic solutions. Capacity to conduct research efficiently and effectively to support arguments and decision-making.
  4. Issue Resolution: Ability to anticipate and proactively address legislative and regulatory issues that may impact the organization's reputation, operations, or business interests.
  5. Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate concepts clearly and persuasively. Capable of communicating legal and policy issues to non-legal stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner.
  6. Strategic Thinking: Strategic mindset to anticipate legal and political risks and opportunities, develop proactive strategies, and mitigate potential liabilities. Capacity to contribute to long-term strategic planning.
  7. Ethics and Integrity: Commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality in all matters. Integrity and professionalism in interactions with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders.
  8. Collaboration and Relationship Building: Collaborative approach to working with internal stakeholders across departments and functions to achieve common goals. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with external partners, including clients, vendors, policymakers, and legal professionals.
  9. Project Management: Project management skills to plan, organize, and execute projects effectively, including managing timelines, resources, and budgets. Ability to prioritize tasks and allocate resources efficiently to meet deadlines and deliver results.
  10. Adaptability and Resilience: Flexibility to adapt to changing legal and political environments, including evolving laws, regulations, and industry trends. Resilience to navigate complex challenges and setbacks with determination and professionalism.
