Police Officer The Town of Concord is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.Applicants must have received certification from a full-time police officer training academy recognized by the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC). Out-of-State applicants: contact MPTC for eligibility requirements (www.mass.gov/mptc). Position requires equivalent to 2 years of college; Bachelor's degree in related field or public safety experience preferred.Must have ability to obtain & maintain MA License to Carry Firearms. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The Town reserves the right to modify the application deadline, and/or to accept applications after the deadline, to best serve the interest of the community. After the deadline, all applications will be reviewed and the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to one or more interviews and/or other assessments. All applicants will be notified of their standing in the process as soon as a decision has been made regarding their individual application. As a condition of employment, successful candidates must be, and remain, a non-smoker. In addition, employees shall be required to reside within twenty (20) miles of the limits of the Town of Concord, as measured from the closest border limits of Concord to the closest border limits of the city or town in which the employee lives. Appointment of the final candidate will be contingent upon the results of pre-placement conditions including criminal, motor vehicle and credit record checks, a physical exam, a drug screening, and a thorough background investigation. Costs for these pre-placement requirements will be borne by the Town. Department: Police Department Salary Grade: Police Officer Reports To: Police Chief FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Appointed By: Town Manager Date: January 2021 Essential Functions : External and internal applicants, as well as position incumbents who become disabled as defined under the Americans With Disabilities Act, must be able to perform the essential job functions (as listed) either unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined by management on a case by case basis. Police Officers must perform a wide range of law enforcement responsibilities necessary to the stability and safety of the community.These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
  • Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventive patrol and other measures.
  • Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm.
  • Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic; enforce traffic rules and regulations and motor vehicle laws by issuing citations.
  • Identify situations that are potential law enforcement or safety problems.
  • Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
  • Promote and preserve the peace.
  • Respond to emergency situations and provide appropriate services as necessary.
  • Pro-actively address issues identified by citizens and/or neighborhood organizations.
  • Creatively solve problems related to improving quality of life in the community.
  • Complete detailed reports on all crimes, vehicle accidents and other incidents requiring police attention.
  • Properly maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Perform all other essential functions of a municipal police officer identified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Human Resources Division. Minimum Qualifications : Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Physical condition necessary to pass a medical exam that is conducted in accordance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division Physician's Guide Initial-Hire Medical Standards.
  • Ability to use physical force in a lawful manner to restrain and apprehend suspects or to suppress violence.
  • Ability to carry and use firearms when authorized in a safe and lawful manner.
  • Ability to function effectively in dangerous situations where personal safety may be in jeopardy and where conditions are stressful.
  • Ability to work for long hours during any part of a 24-hour day, including weekends and holidays.
  • Good reading comprehension and writing skills; ability to prepare and read reports regarding different occurrences, disturbances, and accidents.
  • Good verbal communication skills; ability to interact with co-workers, supervisors and the general public in an effective manner.
  • Good moral character as evidenced by a background investigation.
  • Ability to speak a second language helpful. Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Minimum of two years college coursework or relevant training in criminal justice or related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience; Bachelor's degree in related field or public safety-related experience preferred.
  • Certified by the Municipal Police Training Committee as a Police Officer.
  • Possession of valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms.
