Podcast Scriptwriter

The Wright Report United States
No longer accepting applications

THE PODCAST: The Wright Report (TWR) launched in April of 2023 as a daily news podcast — with a mix of domestic and international news plus analysis and opinion.

The podcast airs at 5 AM Eastern, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday specials. TWR is available on all major podcast platforms, plus Substack engagement for paid subscribers.

THE REACH: Circa 20K daily downloads, including 2.5K paid subscribers. The goal is to reach 40K daily downloads by Q4 of 2024, with 5K paid subscribers. A Scriptwriter is vital to achieving that goal — an annual bonus.

THE HOST: Bryan Dean Wright is a former CIA Ops Officer and contributor to various newspapers (e.g., LA Times, NY Post), online outlets (e.g., FoxNews.com), and TV guest hits (e.g., Fox News, CNN).

THE STYLE: The Host seeks to take complicated news — especially international news — and find ways to simplify, educate, and inform audiences with good storytelling and a focus on facts, reason, logic, and data.

The podcast's tone is smart but approachable. The Host likes to use everyday analogies to clarify and simplify. When the podcast is over, the goal is to leave listeners more deeply informed, enriched, and entertained.

THE STRUCTURE: The content is generally separated into segments or briefs, with each focused on critical facts and

data related to a topic. That is followed by a clear declaration of pivoting to the Host’s analysis and opinion.

THE CULTURE: As the Host expands and grows the podcast, he seeks a team that is loyal, professional, gracious,

detail-oriented, industrious, and humble. Personalities that fit best include hard-chargers, logical, reasoned, mission-driven, witty, and appropriately irreverent.

THE ROLE: The Host seeks a Scriptwriter as an Independent Contractor. The location is remote, with occasional travel to Arizona and Oregon. Compensation is $70K—$90K annually, depending on scriptwriting experience and ability.

An annual bonus will be given based on revenue, demonstrated good attitude, strong work ethic, and value added to the podcast’s growth.

Time off includes federal holidays and those days coordinated in advance with Host.

THE SKILLS: Successful candidates must have:

  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of domestic and international news.
  • 5+ years of experience in a related field preferred.
  • Excellent writing, researching, and editorial skills - style, language, accuracy, and balance.
  • Ability to reliably execute daily duties and tasks between circa 12 pm PT to 7 pm PT, as described below
  • A good & humble attitude, strong work ethic, and proven interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter - the ability to take initiative and work well independently and under pressure with little supervision.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write and edit a daily script of news and analysis, as identified and curated by the Host. The script must be written in the Host’s style and voice.
  • Research news events as needed, focusing on answering the critical question: so what? In other words, why does a busy listener care about a particular piece of news? How does it impact their lives?
  • Utilize diverse sourcing that includes mainstream outlets and appropriate niche outlets of varying editorial biases, with great care placed on understanding the bias of each and teasing out their opinions vs. facts/data.
  • Document hyperlinks in the script regarding referenced news, data, or facts.
  • Provide creative input as time and experience allow.

THE SCHEDULE:

Duties and tasks are performed Sunday - Thursday. (Weekends are Friday & Saturday)

The following is a typical day:

  • The Writer/Producer will review news from America and around the world in the morning based on historical TWR coverage and likely listener interest.
  • The Host will also review news and determine the topics and general outline of the next day’s episode by 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time (PT). That will include an assortment of stories/headlines that will serve as the basis for the script writing and the bulk of necessary research.
  • The Host and Scriptwriter will sync via FaceTime / Skype call from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. PT. The Host will relay the assorted stories/headlines and scope of what should be written. The scriptwriter’s suggested topics and analysis will be welcomed as he/she becomes more acquainted with TWR standards/coverage.
  • The Scriptwriter will write and edit the script from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. PT. Each day’s script will generally be approximately 12 pages / 3,000 words.
  • The final product must be remitted to the Host before 7:00 p.m. PT for final edits. Exceptions will be made for breaking news.
  • The Podcast will be recorded starting at 7:30 p.m. PT and submitted to the Sound Engineer by 9:30 p.m. PT.
