Plain Language Writer

Job Title: Plain Language Writer / Behavioral Insights Specialist

Location: 100% Remote/WFH

Duration: 24-36 months contract+

Project Details:

Review customer communications to ensure they meet the Plain Writing Act of 2010, which is a federal law ensuring that customer communications are clear, concise, and understandable.

The project’s overall objective is to replace the existing mainframe system and other components (web portals, EDMS, etc.) with a commercially available solution built on a modern technology platform.

The project is being done in two phases. The first phase is underway and runs through July 2025. The second project will start fall of 2024 and run through sometime in 2026/2027. Work may be somewhat sporadic throughout the timeframe.

Job Description:

• Work for this role involves reviewing and rewriting customer-based computer screens, correspondence letters, texts, etc. into plain language as defined by the Plain Writing Act of 2010. This legislation applies to both paper and electronic letters, publications, forms, notices, and instructions.

Plain language has:

• Reader-centered organization
• Design features (headers, lists, tables)
• Short sentences/paragraphs
• Pronouns
• Active voice/verbs
• Less jargon/fewer acronyms

Required Skills/Years of Experience:

Plain Language Writing according to Federal guidelines

Nice to Have:

Preference will be given to candidates who have been a member of the Plain Language Community of Practice for at least a year.
