Duties

  • Apply knowledge or work processes, and standard scientific practices to direct varied rules, procedures to assigned assignments. Employee has complete responsibility for assigned projects that are portions of more complex projects or programs assigned to a higher-grade engineer and/or professional scientist. Applies professional Physicist theory and practices and developmental knowledge of other engineering and scientific disciplines to assigned projects.
  • Uses physical laws and texts, scientific and technical materials and standard publication to obtain information and pertinent data to be used by higher grade physicist, engineers, contractors and /or customers. Keeps abreast of emerging technologies and professional developments to maintain current in the field and for application to work assignments.
  • Participates in the research, collection, investigation, and application of scientific data and their relationship to the assigned area of study. Incumbent must apply judgment in the independent application of the professional methods and techniques previously learned. Recommends course of action for technical problems which are not covered by standard scientific practices.
  • Uses a wide range of manuals, standard publications and technical materials to obtain information, analyze data and prepare reports. Presents briefings or presentations on findings, which may require gaining senior officials' acceptance of proposed solutions.

Basic Requirements

  • Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

or

  • Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Professional knowledge of physical laws, policies, theories, principles and concepts, to apply to scientific methods and techniques to solve assigned problems.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and apply physical laws and procedures in a variety of situations and recommend effective solutions to senior physicists.
  • Professional knowledge of physics and related disciplines to assign, develop and adapt scientific methods and techniques to recommend solutions for scientific and engineering problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of computer operatins and standard software applications.
