Duties

  • Administers guidance and regulatory expertise for environmental policy direction, calculations, and input for air, soil and water projects and proposed actions.
  • Provides expertise in the administration and coordination of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for air, soil and water projects and proposed actions.
  • Assist field office staff in the preparation of Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, Categorical Exclusions, and Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI) documents.
  • Conducts onsite monitoring of construction sites and implementation of new projects for possible hazardous materials and environmental impacts.
  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team dealing with issues concerning hazardous materials and environmental protection.
  • Assemble essential information on topics of hazardous material, air, soil, and water and facilitate the training of various resource specialists.
  • Analyzes scientific data to assess and report on the status of environmental conditions.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the individual occupational requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Experience in the fields of environmental science, physical science, hydrology, or geology, conducting and/or assisting with natural resources research projects. Collecting and analyzing environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, soil erosion, air quality, or hazardous materials. Utilizing basic scientific techniques, procedures, and methods to provide support in the planning, development, or implementation for components of assigned programs/projects. Carrying out, interpreting, and explaining basic studies to evaluate program or project performance. Preparing parts of reports or written evaluations to explain and convey findings related to scientific programs, projects, or processes. Assisting in identifying and resolving scientific issues which could have an impact on the program/project. OR A Ph. D or successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher lever graduate education leading to a Ph. D.

OR A combination of higher-level graduate education and experience. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: May be required to walk or ride in vehicles over rough terrain while completing field work. Duties may involve bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or lifting.

Work Environment: Some work is performed in an office setting, other work is completed in the field which may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and hazards such as wildlife and chemical and physical hazards.

Education

This Position Has An Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) That Must Be Met. To Be Considered, Applicants Must Meet One Of The Below Requirements:

  • A degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
  • A combination of education and experience. Education must be equivalent to one of the majors shown above and included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience.
